OK - so I have done a search and read but no real answers...should I fit a peformance chip or the
techlusion? What advantage does the latter offer -
more subtle adjustment and variable control?? Or do they do much the same? ALSO how easy is it to fit the Techclusion oneself?

One of my mates has fitted both and it works. Do a search about "Techlusion show me the proof" or something like that. I posted a dyno graph of the results.

I'll try and lay out some logic, hopefully it will make sense.

1. Chip

A pre-set map you can't alter. If its right for your bike you have scored. However, it may improve things in one area and be lacking in others. This is where the Techlusion can help. My mates bike saw something like a 11hp increase in the mid range because the chip was running quite lean in this area. It only added about 1-2hp at the top end. One major point is that the chips usually raise the rev limiter from 7500rpm to about 8400rpm and as we all know more revs = more hp.

2. Techlusion

A reasonable range of mixture adjustment (fuel increase) which allows you to set the performance characteristic to some extent to the way you want to ride the bike. This can appear to give a hp increase which is where the rider wants it. In my experience it can really improve torque in the right places. However, as I am discovering its main limitation is, it cannot raise the rev limiter threshold. So, if like me, you start to get it going OK, you cant squeeze the extra out of it because that damn buggering pig useless rev limiter cuts in and you cant go any faster.

Conclusion:

I think I went the right route by going with Techlusion first. It smooooths out the power and reduces vibration under severe flogging. Increases throttle pick up and turns the bike into a damn fine ride. But cos I am a git, I may buy a chip during the winter just so I can get the extra 900rpm at the top end. Am I sad or what??

Unless, that is, someone knows how to up the rev limiter without changing the chip. I know someone out there knows how to do this and its you. I'm waiting. :D
