Hi there,

The Laser pipe for my 1100 has just about had it so I'm interested in swapping it out for an original pipe that Richie gave me.

The question is, I bought the bike with the Laser pipe on it and I don't know if the chip was changed for this. Is there any way I can easily find out before I put the original system back on?

Look for signs that the motronic unit has been opened. Its a sealed unit and the only way in is to cut it. Its lives under the tank, so please post up about your bike not running correctly when you refit the tank. :D

Scrap that last comment, I can see now that it's the silver aluminium piece. Can't tell if it's been tampered with but I guess we'll see :)

Back in 98 I fitted a Laser pipe and chip to my new 1100 ...when the unit is removed and screws removed it can be prised open as it is held together with a small amount of silicone. I actually wore anti-static gloves when swapping chips. I think if I were you I'd leave it alone. BTW ...the Laser + chip did make a significant power difference.

Thanks, with so many other variables at the moment, I've elected to put the half-fallen to pieces laser exhaust back on for the short term and try and get the bike running properly first before I switch the exhaust back over again.

In case you're interested, the bike started straight away with the replacement loom and everything back on so quite pleased with myself. I''ve managed to short out the r/h indicator in the process but all things considered I'm quite happy with the fact that I even managed to resurrect it from such a massive failure using only Ebay, this site and advrider and at a total cost of about 150 euros.

There seems to be a bit of a flat spot now at about 2500 rpm but I'm going to give it a service now and try and balance the throttles the see if that clears it.

Had a little ride on it earlier and felt a little emotional, having done about 50k miles on it before it died about 18 months ago, different than the 1200 I bought to replace it, but still a great bike, hopefully I can get it a bit more ship-shape now, ready for my 1500 mile haul to Estonia on it July.

Thanks for your help in any case, I'm just off to make a post about my indicator problem ;)

If you swop it back to standard I have a chip for it (P Prom) which I bought from Germany for £30... It worked very well but I have had to get another one as I fitted a Remus.... SO its yours for £20 if you want it and then you can be sure its right.

Thanks Mike, I'll definitely take you up on that should it turn out that I need one.

Thanks for the offer.

Thanks Michel,

I think you have some idea of the scale of this achievement for someone of my level of mechanical ability!

I'll get there in the end :)

Yes I must admit I didn't think that 1100 would ride out of your garage again, a year ago or so.
Quite the achievement, we'll have to go off-roading again soon :thumb2

Cheers,
Michel

I just put the standard can back on and actually it seems to run at least as well if not better than with the Laser can, so I must presume that the bike never had a chip with the changed end can.

It now makes that crazy German whirring sound on tickover and that bunny fart backfire on closing the throttle but it runs better so I'm happy.

Thanks for the tips

David
