I'm still toying with the options list to see what it will cost me if I buy new but one question - why would anybody want chrome exhausts? I assume that these are downpipes rather than the muffler (both perhaps?)

Aren't the standard ones made of stainless steel? Does a chrome exhaust not 'blue' like the standard ones? Does it clean easier? It sounds like a waste of money but maybe I'm missing something (and that is quite possible!)

Thanks

David

I've had chrome pipes on my last two GS's (they came with them fitted i did'nt ask for them  ) They look great polished up, if you are into that sort of thing, i'm not and i would'nt pay good money for chrome pipes :nenau

Stainless look fine even if you leave them to go brown, if you want to clean them, "Wonderwheels" works well as long as you are careful about splashes :thumb

The idea is that you can polish the blueing out of chrome pipes but you can't with stainless. Can't see much point in the chrome ones myself.

My 1200gsa came with chrome pipes and IMHO think they are a waste of money.

I specced and payed for Chrome pipes (didn't add a lot to an already expensive bike),I've seen what the stainless ones end up looking like after 6 months :mmmm

Same for me. These things are always very subjective. I don't like the colour of the stainless pipes so I paid for the chrome ones.

Optional?

Chrome downpipes were an option?
Aren't factory standard are stainless.

Yes Chromed stainless steel is an option on all the latest 1200's instead of the standard non chromed stainless steel downpipes.
My 1200GSA was one of the "spare ones" that turned up at Pidcocks when the bike was launched in March and came with Chromed down pipes. This mean't that I avoided the waiting list. Otherwise I would not have bothered with the chrome option.

My 1st 12 GS had standard pipes and after 6 months looked rather scruffy, brown and (lightly) corroded

My 2nd GS has the chrome and after 6 months looks a hell of a lot better.

That's not down to more cleaning either.

I chose s/s on my 12GSA ,might change the d/pipes for non kat pipes later so didn`t see the point in paying.
I did see another ADV in the isle of man and that had chrome d/pipes and silencer cover!.
still ok with the s/steel ones :thumb

My chrome exhaust doesnt look very chrome at all, in fact brown is how I would describe it, without further polishing anyway. I bought a showroom bike already specced with chrome, but tbo I wouldnt bother if I had the choice.

:rob My exhaust takes burnt fuel/air from the engine and takes it out past the back wheel. Job done. Oh, it was nice and shinny, now it's mostly brown.
