I have had a 550 since 2008 ,have lifetime updates which I do frequently, all of europe on the sd card and have never had it fail to update and it has never crashed( hopefully sods law isn't going to kick in)
I have recently brought the latest City Nav Europe 2012 from Garmin. I went to install it on my 550 last night but it kept saying there was not enough space on the unit.

The unit was reporting 400Mb free so, I freed up space on the 4GB SD card by deleting my MP3's but it still said only 400MB free :blast

I'll have another go tonight but, it looks like the map data is installed to the units internal memory which appears to be less than 2GB.

How have you managed to get all of Europe on the SD card?

Aha, when you click "send to device" you have the option to send it to any drive that is detected by the computer.... the 550's memory card being one of them.

So, I have installed 1.5GB of maps to the units internal memory and put the remaining 700MB of map data on the SD card :thumb2

Took the plunge for lifetime updates the other day:type.
When downloading the update maps a warning that there is not enough space on the zumo for the whole of uk and europe.:blast
ok i thought, and just downloaded to the computer first and update the zumo later.
So tried later on to update the zumo and deal with the lack of space.
I am given other choices of pre selected parts of europe that fit.
Western europe looked ok but has iceland, norway, denmark, sweden and greece, which I dont want.
Central europe has no uk or portugal which I do want:blast.
Why cant I just pick the countries I want:confused:.
None of the other options suit my needs.
I have read that it is possible to select the countries that you want and send them to memory card, saved as suplimentary maps(gmapsupp.img).
Then to explore the files on zumo and delete the gmapprom.img file and replace it with gmapsupp.img and remame the gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img and this will give me MY selection as the main maps, yes/no:nenau
Think am getting old:rob

There's a few ways to overcome the lack of memory in the Zumo, First though you must download the complete set of Numaps to your computer only..
When this has finished, open up Mapsource, make sure that 'City Navigator Europe NT 2012.1' is showing in the top left map selection box.
Zoom out until you can see all of the maps you have installed, then using the 'Map Tool' (looks like a broken square), select the maps you want and send them to your Zumo.

I have found that all except, Iceland, and Northern Scandinavia will fit in the unit, the rest can if wanted, be installed on a 2GB memory card, (I don't have music or pictures on my card)

That's it :thumb

Rather than delete your old gmapprom.img copy it to your PC or a memory stick, just in case.

Also you'll need to ensure that the mapping on your PC is fully unlocked. By default I don't think this is the case as normally you'd only be using it for planning routes etc and not actually transferring it to your GPS. Press Ctrl-U in Mapsource and select the map product you're going to use, then click the 'Unlock Online' button. You'll need to plug in your GPS at this point, then click the 'retrieve unlocks' button (assuming that you wrote some of the mapping to your GPS), otherwise you'll need the information asked for in the other fields.

When you're selecting mapping tiles to write to the unit you should be able to see the size of the file-set you're creating at the bottom left if you have the maps tab selected. Having copied your gmapprom.img to somewhere safe and having deleted it check how much space you have on your Zumo, ensure that your map set is 50-100MB or so shy of that. If you want a bit more space delete unused voices.

Save the final selection of map tiles in Mapsource as a GDB file, that way you have a reference of what areas you have coverage for, otherwise you may easily forget and get a shock on a far flung Euro tour.

One of the guys on, ISTR, the VFR site got a card corruption in the South of France a couple of months ago. He had all his mapping on the card :blast

As you suggest, best to keep the main part of the mapping on the unit itself.

Thanx for the confirmation Mr B.

I was wondering how I would remember which tiles I had loaded :blast

Also.......while experimenting with the zumo I updated the old 2009 maps with central europe 2012.1 to make sure they were unlocked and working.
When on mapsource to see what countries were covered I tried to 'recieve from device' and picked 'maps' and mapsource says this device does not contain any maps??????????
They are there on the zumo and show up on map info.
Can mapsource see the gmapprom.img maps or only gmapsupp.img maps ???

This will only add your selection as a supplimentary map file and not as the main map file.
Plus there will not be enough space untill the origional main map file is deleted:flag.

Yeah, I forgot that bit... but it doesn't make any other difference, the maps work seemlessly, regardless which ones are on the SD card, I know this 'cos that's how it works on my 550.

When you go update the maps on the Zumo you will get a popup to tell you that the update is too large to fit and gives you a number of region options that will fit.
Up to you which region of preselected maps that you want.
I chose Central Europe and put UK, Portugal, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Eastern Europe on a card.:flag

same here.... athough i choose western europe and put eastern on card. with the card installed in my 550 and zoomed out, the tiles can be seen. as said before it works purfectly.

Hman

With my 550 I deleted (and backed up) all the voice filles that I do not use from the units memory (ie french.sum and vpm) This frees up around 231mb on the unit and all the update files then fit ok.
It worked for me but back up the files just in case.
