City Navigator® Morocco NT - worth 100USD?

Hi

I have the mapsource version of this , and its very good , pity you didnt have a bit more time you could have had a copy.

If you type in US in teh local tab at the top of the link its $109 which is @ £72:59 at todays rate.Type in UK in the link and its £88.

Think I'll stick to the old fashioned method rather than pay the extra.

Why would you want to pay $100 for something, that elsewhere is better and FREE?

I have Olaf's installed already but with these maps I can not say "drive to me to address x in the middle of Marrakesh". Far as I know at least. I've been asking around and according to Tim, Olaf's maps are just useful for pistes and stuff outside of cities.

There seems to be some confusion about this - Olaf's maps are not "plug and play". You need to painstakingly select waypoints via your mac / pc software and "routes" can only be drawn in straight lines on the screen. That is then all transferred to the GPS, but I'll have to report back after my trip to explain what this actually does on the ground. So far I have found no definitive answer.

see this post

I think I'll buy these maps, there is a download option.

Not so - I used Olafs maps to navigate and lead a ride through the souk in marrakesh, every tiny lane showed on my GPS.

As filmed by Roberto.

Steptoe,

Can you program an address in to your GPS and then have it drive you there? Or do you punch in long / lat coordinates as the "destination"? Currently I have Olaf's maps on my machine but am unable to search for any city in morocco, nothing shows up.

Did you prepare anything special on your computer apart from just transferring the maps to your machine such as marking waypoints, preprogramming routes, etc. I've been doing this but have no idea what the device will do once on the ground there.

Which model Garmin do you have?

Stef

We used these maps in Morocco last year with routes pre done on Mapsource - the accuracy with which the route follows a particular road depends purely on how accurately you have 'drawn' it in MS.

When you view the map in location it will just show a 'route' line that you have put there which will roughly follow a particular road. There is no routing software contained in the map - unlike the pukka Garmin products - which tells the GPS to follow roads and then give you verbal/visual instructions on how to get there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, this does help.

So far I've been "drawing" routes by just dragging a straight line between A and B. I guess what I need to do is draw more accurately to follow the roads.

That's more or less what I did.

On many sections accuracy 'aint a particular issue cos there are no other roads around to get confused with.

But if you have be accurate - you can.
Like Steptoe, I did use the Zumo to navigate through ther streets of Marrakesh and it worked fine- you just need to be accurate with your drawing.

Weird thing is, I didn't think I could get the Olaf maps down to "narrow streets in a city" detail level.

Will investigate when I get home and perhaps still buy the Garmin maps.

Thanks so much for all the help.

Well it's all part of the adventure of visiting a country outside of Europe. When I first visited Morocco there was no GPS mapping and all navigating was done using a MAP. ;)

If you want a GPS that gives you the exact route and destination, then where is the fun in that. :nenau May as well stick to European destinations.

Besides, in each city or large town, moped boys will be falling over themselves to take you to your destination for a very small fee. :thumb I once was led to a hotel by a couple of guys on roller skates, now that was impressive!

Also, don't be afraid of asking the Police for directions, they all speak French and a few will speak a little English. I've always found them to be polite and courteous.

Anyway, buy the Garmin map and let us know what you think about it compared to Olaf's.

My sentiments exactly, for many, the adventure element whilst travelling in Morocco will have been greatly diluted without them even realising it:thumb

Steptoe,

No. I use it as a glorified map. Zoom in and and out, and to see where you are as you drive though all the small streets in a major town.
As in the video. I knew where i wanted to exit the souk, and just headed along the lanes that my gps was showing me in map form and would take me to the exit i wanted .
It would have been impossible using a map while riding along.

But i do carry a good map.

I agree. I've done Vietnam, Thailand, Costa Rica solo on (sometimes just photocopied) maps and always been fine.

Then again in France of all places I wasted hours and hours just trying to do 350Km off highways, stopping at every junction, gloves off, map out, figure out where to go ... complete PITA.

Anyway I like being prepared just in case, and just bought this map (its actually over 90 EUR incl tax). Installing now. Will report back in 2 weeks :)

Alright bought the thing but the software says there is a file with the same name already on my device. I can either replace it or save the Morocco maps to a data card.

Since I don't have a data card I don't want to risk it overwriting my EU maps which I'll need. So there goes 90 euros ...

For the search engines: City Navigator® Morocco NT - City Navigator® Morocco NT by Garmin is not a product that can easily be installed on a GPS with preinstalled maps. Beware and think twice before purchasing these maps. Olaf's maps are a free alternative and seem like a better option that the City Navigator® Morocco NT maps by Garmin

I would call Garmin on the Freephone number, and see what they say, if it does over-ride existing maps, wouldn't it be possible to reinstall NT Europe from the original DVD?

What nav do you have?

Are you trying to install the map by installing it into mapsourse first and then selecting it and transferring it to the device using the appropriate mapsource button?
