City Navigator Eastern Europe - good news and bad news...

The bad news: It is only available on pre-programmed SD format cards. I don't know what the story is behind this, I have made an inquiry.

Possibly an attempt at stopping people copying it? And the SD/uSD cards cannot be locked? Does not make much sense...

It does make it easier to transport it from one unit to another .. but removes the PC planing ablity...

And while offering a cheaper limited northern unit .. they have not done a cheaper limited southern unit ...

Hah! I knew it was worth buying the i3 for £99 from Somerfield. :D

Hello Michael,

I'm planning a trip into Poland for next year and was hoping to use my trusty (ahem) Quest 2. Whilst it is good to see that mapping software for Eastern Europe is now available, an SD card is of no use to me and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Any chance you could point that out to the Garmin brass ?

Cheers.

PS. Hope the flight north went well :thumb

I thought he said he had :o
Oh, and if you want to swop your obsolete non-SD compatible Quest 2 for my up-to-date fully SD enabled i3, I'd be happy to oblige. :D

Having met Michael, in a professional sense, and knowing pilots as I do, you have to keep reminding them :)

Your screen is too small ;)

all this techno stuff

and to think that, once upon a time, Sopwith Camels used to fly in formation in cloud with only a half filled glass of whisky with a horizontal line painted on. used as an A.I.....
Prompty drank upon landing again :D
Those were the days! no updates - no codes - just a 'who's buying the next round?' :thumb

Pardon my ignorance... Is it not possible to read the contents of the SD card on any PC with a suitable reader?

Just asking...

OK Guys:

I have had some conversations (by email) with the folks at Garmin, and there is good news coming on this topic. I just have not received permission to disclose the good news yet (the email I got did not make it clear whether I could disclose the info or not, and I don't want to make any social errors).

So, quit worrying, the problem will be non-existent in a very short while, and as soon as I get permission to tell you the good news (meaning, the bad news has now been converted into good news), I will do so.

FYI, I am in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles right now... I departed the Falkland Islands about 4 days ago, and have been moving north at about 15 degrees latitude per day since then. It ain't a fast plane... :D

If the plan hasn't changed then please say hello to Les from me, and have a safe trip back :)

Hi There!

Les and I are together on FBC. I am driving the truck and he is keeping me out of trouble. :D All in all, we are having a great time! Arrived in Bermuda today, will take a day off here before continuing on to Halifax (quick fuel stop), Goose Bay, Greenland, Iceland, and hopefully arriving in Oxford the afternoon of July 4th.

I have been using an aviation GPSR that downloads detailed weather information from a satellite (not a GPS satellite, but a different satellite altogether - this GPSR has two antennas). It's kind of neat, the only problem is that information from the weather satellite - which is actually the American XM radio satellite - can only be received when the plane is in or close to the United States. I started to pick up weather information just north of San Juan, and the information started to fade as we got closer to Bermuda. Perhaps I will get more weather reception (and take some pictures) tomorrow, as we pass to the east of the state of Maine.

Below are some photos. If you are curious about the GPSR - which can also be used on a moto, because it is waterproof - there is more information about it here: Garmin 396.

Nice pics Michael :thumb

BC is looking good and may I say that the orange immersion suit really brings out the colour of your eyes :D

Happy landings at Oxford.

Hoping to "do" the Dalmatian coast next summer, so asked Garmin about it for a Nav 3. They replied it should be out in early 2007 as ver 9.

Haley

Micheal

Noticed the plane you are stood in front of and wondered if you have been down to a base in Antarctica, I think its called Haley.

Just that one of my friends spent the last couple of years down there.

Cheers
