So whats the difference between these two?.

City Select with Garmin V, V4, free update to V6

City Navigator with SPIII V5, Free update to V6

Some clues, have not registered either unit, or used the unlock codes yet.

Went for the SPII as I'm blind and wanted the extra memory in the end.

Thanks

Gary.

I have both installed on my PC and the only difference I can see is the size and shape of the tiles - you get more smaller ones with City Select probably to accomodate the small memory of the V.

Apart from that the maps are identical and you can switch between the Navigator and Select at will. The routes and waypoints remain active and the only thing that changes is the map selection.

There may be some different POI information for the map regions but this isn't apparent.

Don't be silly, of course you do. City Select works with the GPS V and City Navigator works with the SPIII, both of which autoroute/navigate... or does the SPIII do something special that the V can't? I haven't seen it if it does.

CityNavigator has more road attributes than City Select. You don't see these on the visual display, but they allow better route calculation and better turn and lane change guidance.

For motorcycle use, either product is fully suitable, although CityNavigator does a better job of providing guidance through roundabouts ("Take 3rd exit", as opposed to "keep right, keep right, turn left").

If you plan to drive a heavy truck, a delivery vehicle, or a large bus, CityNavigator is needed.

The SP III does do some things that the GPS V does not - for example, it enables you to specify what type of vehicle you are (delivery vehicle, emergency vehicle, heavy truck) and it will adapt the guidance accordingly. It won't send a heavy truck into a tiny back lane where it cannot turn or fit. It will allow an emergency vehicle to route the wrong way down one way streets.

I might have overstated that a bit! But I did check the Garmin website before posting and they do use distinctly different terminology to describe these two products. It's also clear that you won't get the best out of an SPIII or 2610 if you use CitySelect and you won't get the best out of CityNavigator if you use it on a Garmin V (if you can).

Thanks to PanEuropean for his comments.

The differences are only minor between CN and CS

Note that for Australia there is only City Navigator
and for South Africa only City Select
and Garmin recommend both products for both SPIII and GPS V

If I was buying an auto-routing product for an SPIII (or 2610) for another country and CN was more than 10% more expensive than CS then I would purchase CS.

On a GPS V you can specify the following vehicle types;
Car
Truck
Bus
Emergency
Taxi
Delivery
Bicycle
Pedestrian

I had always assumed that the "select" was for units with black & white displays and the "Navigator" was for colour displays. That's the way it is supplied.

City Select is in colour on my Garmin iQue. I can also use it in my Garmin Streetpilot Mono.

There are absolutely no visual differences between CN and CS, assuming you are comparing the same versions of both products.

CN has a few more hidden road attributes - these are not visible to the user, but are used for either route calculation purposes, or for more precise text and spoken guidance when following a route.
