as i have city nav loaded . and have a city select update disc that wont work???

is it me???

I'm not the best to tell you Slimbo, but the others seem busy. According to PanEuropean there is very little (if any) difference in the maps. I definately remember him saying that one way you would be able to tell the difference, would be that City Navigator would give you more information at turns eg the screen may say "Turn right onto Oakfield Terrace" whereas City Select may just say "Turn Right". From what I've read on here, Garmin have stopped making City Select. No doubt someone who knows more will be along shortly. :D

They are marketed as two different products. Technically CN has a few more attributes in it that marginally improves routing. Previously Garmin have used CN for their more expensive products and CS for the cheaper ones. The reason for the existance of two different products are probably due to Navteq (map provider) licensing/pricing of the data.

The rumour right now (Garmin allegedly have said it to customers) is that with the upcoming upgrade to version 8 CitySelect will dissapear and that CS-customers will be forced to CityNavigator if they want version 8.

Update CD's are always free from Garmin but to be able to use the update you need to pay for the unlock code anyway.

Right now maybe isn't the smartest time to do an upgrade unless you really, really need it at this absolute moment. Having paid for an upgrade to version 7 will not be very fun the moment version 8 is out, which should be any day now. Keep an eye on this page to see when version 8 arrives and other details about the upgrade: http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp

CN v8 may well have increased coverage in Europe as well

This is correct, i got a letter from Garmin confirming that only citynavigator will be available in V8

This suggests that anyone, myself included, who has been holding back on registering City Select 6/7 in the hope of getting a free upgrade to CS v8 is going to be disappointed :(

Looks like the only way to upate the mapping for the Quest v1 would be to buy City Navigator 8 when it comes out. As this would not be an upgrade, but instead a different programme, sounds like it would be an expensive option.

Or am I missing something here...

My guess is that you will get the best deal ever on CityNavigator if you just hang in there a little more :bounce1

It would be madness of Garmin not to offer the City Select-customers an upgrade path to City Navigator. The most logical thing would be that you get the upgrade for free if you register your CitySelect after the release date of CityNavigator version 8. YMMV. :thumb

Not so sure... I would be interested to know if Garmin have ever set a precedent for this?

From the Garmin website the only free upgrades are those between different version numbers of the same software. In this case CN is a different package from CS and therefore I would be surprised if Garmin were to offer a free upgrade - certainly their terms put them under no obligation to do so.

Hopefully I'll be proved wrong... ;)

Garmin contacted me before xmas to inform me if i registered the quest within 21 days of the new city navigator v8 being released i would get a free upgrade ,apparently it comes on 3 discs as well

I recently got an e mail from Garmin concerning updating my Quest which despite being purchased this month from Maplins still came with the older v6 City Select software. E mail confirmed the following:

Thankyou for your patience the past few months. Due to unexpected high demand Garmin no longer have any supply of the version 7 upgrades. Garmin will not be producing any more upgrades to version 7 due to the fact that version 8 will be available towards the end of January. Garmin will also be discontinuing the City select software as it has reached it limitations of what it can do. What Garmin have done is allow your current GPS to be upgraded to the City Navigator software. The City Navigator has a improved routing algorithm compared to the City Select. This will improve the routing on your GPS.

So looks like I will be getting free upgrade to City Navigator v8 :thumb

Not sure what the position would be if your Quest came with v7 to begin with
