Hi,

Local Garmin dealer has no City Navigator Cd but has City Select V7.
Sealed in envelope.
If I buy this, will I be able to upgrade to CN V8 - if so will it be free?

Probably not x 2.

Where did he get it from? If it was sealed from an original GPS unit, where's the unit? What kind of 'Garmin' dealer are we talking about?

Be aware that the upgrade CDs are free from Garmin, the unlock codes (which you download) cost money.

And what GPS have you got? Did it come with Mapsource & an original set of maps? If so, what version? If not, then you can't upgrade.

Sorry to be so negative; it all sounds a bit iffy to me, but I don't know all the facts.

Good luck.

What do you plan to use it for? To upgrade your current map or as the first map for a unit without map? What GPS model do you have?

An upgrade map CD is free so you dealer can't charge you for it. It's the codes that comes with the CD that carries value.

If you plan to upgrade an existing map license you don't need this CD at all. The upgrade (to V8) you do on www.garmin.com including ordering of the V8 DVD, unlock codes, etc.

If you plan to buy your first map to a GPS that comes without map (as 276c, 60C, etc) you need a kit consisting of a MapSource CD + two map CD's + a Cupon Code. The price should be less than EUR 200. This kit can be upgraded to map version V8 without cost.

Hi,
Thanks for replies! Should have been more specific...

I have a 276c which I bought new witout any mapping here in Saudi, then bought a Saudi map chip - ok for the region. I have a mapsource cd but no codes.

The dealer is the official Garmin one for Middle East.

I was looking for a deal on Aspid.com, but no sign of CN V8 so this made me think CS V7 would do the job. It is offered for about 100 quid. Even if no upgrade, it seems not too bad ??

When you buy an Automotive Kit for the 276C from Aspidshop you get -
- MapSource (the PC program) license and CD
- Map V8 license (but not the DVD)
- 256 MB map memory chip
- Power and data cables
- Car mount

In the box you will find CD's with the map V7 and a Cupon Code. With this Cupon Code you can retreive unlock codes for both V7 and V8 of the map from www.garmin.com. The DVD with the V8 map you can order free of charge from Garmin Europe.

Note - there are no maps on CD for sale that can't be upgraded to V8. What you buy is only the Cupon Code and that entitles you to the most current map version. Also don't forget that the PC software MapSource is required to use the map and so is the memory chip.

Bottom line: Don't buy a map CD only. Buy a complete Automotive Kit. The only situation when you can buy a separate map is when you already have an Automotive Kit for one region (USA) and want a map for another region (Europe).

Depending on what you actually have you may already be half way to an Automotive Kit. Maybe this is what you can do:

- I assume you already have all mounting details & cabling OK.
- I assume you already have MapSource? Try to install your MapSource CD on your PC. Does it run? Can you upgrade it to the latest version at www.garmin.com? If successful - fine!
- Do you already have an empty 256 MB memory chip? If not buy a 512 MB chip from some internet site in the US. Price $150.
- Buy the CN7 CD you are talking about. Check that there in an unused Cupon Code comming with it! Login at www.garmin.com and retreive the unlock code for V8. Order a free CN8 upgrade DVD from Garmin UK.

Good luck!

I think it might be worth your while to contact Garmin and ask them this question directly. I note that there is a European version 8 out now for MetroGuide and for City Navigator, but no version 8 for City Select. I kinda sorta think (don't quote me on this) that City Select has been discontinued, and current City Select users will be upgraded to the next version of City Navigator when and if they are eligible for an upgrade.

As far as I know, if you buy a cartography product from an authorized dealer, and a newer version has been issued prior to the date of purchase, you get a free update. But, please confirm this with Garmin first, don't take my word for it.

HMR makes some good points about the automotive kit including other bits and pieces that you will need - for example, the beanbag mount, the 12 volt plug with the speaker in it, and the data chip. So, even if you are eligible for a free V7 to V8 upgrade, it might be less expensive overall for you to buy the 296 automotive kit.
