Unfortunately I bought my 2610 in May 2004, so Garmin want $150 for the unlock code to Version 7

Hello Sugar Ray,

Did you actually register your 2610 at the Garmin site already? If not, you're lucky: the update is still free! It doesn't matter when you bought the unit, only the registration date on the Garmin site is important!

BTW, the CD's are always sent free of charge, at least in the Netherlands.

Hope this helps you for a free update to version 7. If so, could you do me a small favor  ?

Being a bit of a computer numpty, is there a way of finding out the date of registration from my computer?

Unfortunately I did register my unit & the software at the time of purchase, so I'll have to fork out the $150 if I want the upgrade :(

Regards,

Charles

EJ, did you ever register your unit at the Garmin site? If not, you're not a registered owner yet. That means, if you have bought a Garmin GPS with either City Navigator (comes e.g. with a Streetpilot 3 or 2610) or City Select Map software, you have the right to one free update of the mapping product.

That is also the reason you should NOT register your unit until there's a new update of the mapping software. My dealer told me this when I bought the unit...

Good question - I have no idea. To be honest, I'm as thick as pig muck when it comes to installing / deleting programs, so good old Dennis installed it all for me.

I'll ask him the next time I see him. If he can't remember, how can I tell if it's been registered ?

I can't find a way to do this. The only way I can tell when I installed and registered it is to look for the confirmation email they sent. I keep all my emails, ever !

If you're not sure whether you've already registered, go to this page http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/default.asp

There are two ways to go on: new customer and returning customer. Now type your customer code in the entry field of a RETURNING customer. You will find your customer code on a sheet of paper that came with your GPS unit. On the sheet (at least on mine) you first find 'IMPORTANT!' in several languages, and then the unit serial number, the unlock code and the registration code. The latter (the registration code) is your customer code. Fill it in the box for a returning customer and proceed to step 2. If you get an error message, you're not registered! Which means you still have one free update of the map software

I bought a 2nd hand 2610 to use for the bike, it had v5 city nav. but they sent me the links and information so that I 'm able to use the euro city select v7 from my ique on the 2610 too.

It would be interesting to know the details required for using the City Select map on the 2610.

Why are there two maps if they are compatible? I thought that 2610 and Sp3 worked ONLY with City Navigator while the Quest and 276C worked ONLY with City Select????

That man's a genius. :D

He truly is a genuis

I second that. He just saved me the cost of an upgrade.
I had not yet registered my 2610. Now I can get the free upgrade many thanks tip bloke.

:D

Been thinking about this. If you are unsure (like me) whether you have registered the unit or not , what happens if you just try and register it ? Ie, do you get a message saying "Already Registered" ?

Yes - answering your own questions is one of the first signs of madness. :P Been playing about a bit and for those of you who are thinking of splashing out to get the latest version, it is worth checking whether you have registered already. If you haven't registered, you are entitled to the latest version for free (provided you register after a specified date which has now passed). Apart from the method mentioned earlier, another simple way to find out whether the unit has been registered, is to just try and register it again at

http://www.garmin.com/unlockregister/register.jsp

If you have already registered, you will get the following message

The registration code you entered has already been used. Perhaps you already registered your product in a previous installation. If so, you do not have to register again. Otherwise, please check the registration code and re-enter....

If you have not registered previously, you will get an e-mail to confirm that the unit is now registered and a pop-up message telling you that there is an updated version of Mapsource available free.
