Hi all,

I've had my 800 GS now for a while and still enjoying it - what a great bike.

I have one concern though - when I go over bumps or through dips in the road a hear a "clack" noise from below. I checked everything and nothing seems loose. The only thing I can think of is that is is the chain when it falls on the swing arm.

Is anyone out there experiencing the same? Should I be worried?

Cheers

If the noise is coming from the front end you may want to check this thread: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140420

I agree with the people that say it's the floating rotors that make the noise, I have tried using cable ties stop make them fixed and this stops the noise. I have removed them now as I don't mind the noise any more.

Cheers

I've also noticed the centre stand tends to jump up and down when going over rough ground. Could do with a second spring to hold it in place better.

+1 Someone suggested putting a bungee on the centre stand for off-road outings as it certainly does clank about a bit.

Never thought of the floating front disk making a clanking noise but if it does, I can't see that it matters.

Yes, it does make quite a lot of noise. It's the noise you can hear when you pull the front brake and move the bike back and forth. You can also grab the disk and pull it up and down which will make the noise too.

Another sound I normally hear when riding off road is the chain slapping when braking hard with the rear brake (blocking the wheel). Well... I think it is the chain slapping as I cannot think of anything else.

I will try using some cable ties with the centre stand next time, I know of a couple of jumps to test if it reduces the noise :bounce1

Cheers

I should have been clearer. I meant another two springs. 4 in total. Or two very strong springs.

he he yeah.. I knew what you meant.. I was just being an a@@! Mind you.. I installed the centre stand myself and those springs were quite hard to fit! (by hand.. I only had a couple of screw drives and sockets with me) I don't want to imagine what it would take to fit a stronger spring!

Thanks

Thanks for your replies :thumb2

The sound seems to be in the middle and at the bottom of the bike, so the center stand might be the culprit - I'll tie down the center stand and see if that helps.

My own personal 'clonk' turned out to be mal adjusted head bearings...

Despite a 'they all do that' from the dealer of course. :augie

I have one concern though - when I go over bumps or through dips in the road a hear a "clack" noise from below.
My 1150 Adv used to make a "clacking" noise over rough ground - it was the ABS getting all confused and resetting itself (whether brakes on or not).
Handy as it usually meant I'd forgotten to turn it off.

Do 800s have that "clack" from the ABS when they first set off (like the 1150s)?

Thanks for all your helpful and not so helpful comments :augie

I stopped by my local Jap & German Dealer and they quickly noticed there was too much slack on the chain.

After a quick adjustment the sound was gone - top lads :thumb2

that blommin clack sound

On the first service i got alan jefferys to check all the front end as i had gone through this thread looking for the answer.
Every pothole or bump made me think the front was about to self distruct and then!!!!!!!
going down a very steep cobble road i had the front break applied and guess what ? Not a knock ,clack or rattle.
To this end it is on my bike the movement of the floating discs and with the pads clamping it the mystery sloved.
Now i just ride the thing without any worries.

try it!!! on a dry day

Knocking noise at the front?

I have had a knocking noise at the front of my F800gs since I drove it off the forecourt. It's just been in for it's first service and the noise to be checked out. The response was that it is the floating discs and mine are particularly noisy but it's normal. I asked for quieter parts to be fitted and the response was that if BMW decide that the noise is excessive then they will replace whatever it is without ME paying! "I should f***ing hope so, it's brand new!"

The discs do make a certain amount of noise and its nothing to worry about.
More of a worry is if its the headstock bearing that are lose. Id check for play there and if you find any go back and shout loudly at the dealer. We had problems with both our bikes after just 300miles (very excessive play) and we actually got BMW warranty to collect both bikes and taken to the nearest dealers (40miles away) to get sorted.

Cheers Steve, I've found the other thread on this subject and have had all the dealer hassle that everyone else has had. Alan Jefferies refused to check the headstock when I asked them to even though I said Argonaut had his checked there. The most annoying part is the lack of cooperation from the dealer. I picked it up yesterday after a heated discussion with the service director at Jefferies and after just a short ride the smile came back on my face. The bike is awesome! I'll look for the cure myself. F*** em...
