Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

It can get better. My bike was hopeless but now at 6000 miles it changes OK with the clutch below 5000 rpm and is perfect with clutchless changes at any revs but it should be OK using the clutch.

It should be ok. The bike I did 110 miles on before I bought my bike was fine!

Typical, well I suppose I had to get something wrong after getting all my luggage with my bike.......

mine is ok

My new GS which I picked up on Saturday has a clunky gearbox worse between 2-3 and 3-4. Selecting 1st also causes quite a jolt to the bike on occasions. The bike has only done 220 miles but I doubt it will get better?

Shame only issue spoiling what is a great bike. Hope we get a cure before too long! I have told the dealer about the problem but as there is no cure yet I have said they can look at it on the 1st service.

mine is ok now after 4000 miles but if I get a bit lazy it does clonk a bit, ive had better gearbox / clutches but ive also had worse.

I think you just need to get used to it, hopefully there is a fix in the pipeline. and we can put an end to this post lol.

Hi folks,

I've just purchased my wc gs and am mostly very happy with it. When I select first gear it doesn't clunk into gear, there is no movement at all. Gear changes on the most part are very smooth indeed.

I have found that selecting neutral can be difficult sometimes and I'm constantly shifting between 1st and second to get neutral. Also sometimes when I select from first to second it tries to go into go into gear and there is a grinding noise and I have to force it into gear

I have just sold my r1 to buy this bike (which did clunk into first gear). I ride this bike completely differently to the r1. I don't really speed now so I don't know if this is why I'm getting a super smooth gear changes (apart from the minor issues I mentioned above)

I'm going offshore today for two weeks and will try a little more spirited riding when I get back to see if I get the issues everyone describes

I have noticed that one exhaust has tarnished through the heat and the other exhaust is as shiny as the day it came out the showroom. I'm not sure if I should be worried about this

The bike is only a week old though and has 350 miles OTC . I can see me keeping this bike for a very long time

Hi all

My bike has been sat at the dealers waiting for the modified pushrod. A part number has now been issued and can be ordered. Hopefully will get bike back this week with problems solved.

Would you be kind enough to find out and post the part number here? And also ask if there are any other improved/superseded parts being offered?

I have had the push rod fitted (I was one of the first to have this mod but don't know the part number.) some improvement but seems to be getting better as the miles go on. Just picked up the bike with a new updated slave cylinder, (though this has been updated for high mileage bikes). Again a little improvement but not been far enough to make a call. They are going to try a new oil from castrol but it is not yet available in bulk.

Yes my clutch was not acceptable at the start but it is improving as mile pile on and with the mods done.

It is still the best bike that I have ever had and it is now only a little more agricultural than my earlier GS. Been riding for nearly 50yrs.

Am I pleased with the bike YES, would I replace it with a new water cooled one if my went astray YES. What more can I say.

Is there a part number for the slave cylinder, by chance?

Good to hear that it is improving!

Fingers crossed it does the trick and it will be ok for you!

Sorry, never asked!

Might be on the work order?

The reason I ask for this one and the pushrod one is because my local dealer is the sort who you really have to beat over the head to get him to consider warranty issues. My thinking is that if I can give him part numbers and say "look, you can go to BMW and request warranty work for these because the customer is having bad shifting" he will be much more likely to do it.

Guys, we would greatly appreciate if you can share the part numbers....

Had 1st service this morning at Lejeune Motosport in Bastogne, Belgium.

Great service from a very knowledgable guy.

Highly recommended, if you happen to be in southern Belgium.

Up to date about all the clutch issues and knew about the new pushrod, mine has it..

Had a software update, replaced the French software, if you know what I mean??;);)

Wow!

I hope all who have problems get sorted asap, but when working right, this bike is mega!

In the bar of the Hotel Le Marronnier, Rencrel, Vercors :-) ridden the WC from Cambridgeshire, no gearbox problems - been up and down the Col de Rousset and the brilliant Col de Menee and all good so far :-)

Tried to use this dealer last September when we were staying up the road but it was shut for several days after a bereavement. Caused bmw assist hassle when they tried to get a 190 section rear tyre for my K1300.

We stayed there in 2010 hope you have good weather! Nice location. Enjoy your stay!

Bob, ref the updated slave cylinder, do you know what the change is? I wonder if this is one with a slightly smaller bore to disengage the clutch further. Do you feel that the clutch lever is a touch heavier? If so, this is likely to be the change.
I'm waiting for a call from Bill who is getting the updated clutch push rod for my bike. He mentioned BMW were considering a different oil but didn't mention the slave cylinder.

As I understand this, there may be a problem of reduced throw of the slave cylinder that could happen at high mileage. This was an idea to see if it made any difference even on a new bike. Maybe a little better but only been 50 odd miles, so too early to tell.
I gather that there is a different ball bearing within the cylinder but do not know if it has a smaller bore.

gearchanges

Hi ,just done 200miles over and around the Yorkshire moors and gear
changes are TERRIBLE ,grinding and clunks .Definitly not getting any better , still waiting to have clutch replaced ,as suggested by BMW , really spoils the bike. but clutch clears ok neutral easily selected , not convinced it a clutch fault.
