Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

I've made it clear to my supplying dealer that there is a problem with the 1st-2nd 2nd to third gear shift on my bike, but that I don't have any desire to be taking the bike to them every few weeks and that I will take it when a fix is 100% sorted.

I also stated that I would expect the gearbox to be fully inspected for any damage that may have been caused, and repaird or replaced if necessary.I was told that this was an acceptable request.

Just a consideration to add to info so far . Not contradicting anyone .

Not your favourite bike . Harley's often suffer from poor gear change not all apart from the first clunk.
But what helps enormously ? Redline shockproof in gearbox and redline MTL in primary proper dedicated gear oils not engine oil.
Makes a great difference even sometimes stops the first clunk. Just my two penneth .make of it what you will .

The WC has an integral gearbox which shares the engine oil. Doesn't it?

So there are still some whining Poms that can't ride hoping BMW will change a perfectly good bike that has outsold all competitors ? Boys and Girts, buy a hardly and it'll make no difference to your riding style and you'll really have a bike you deserve !

I am new to this thread and have not the time to read 72 pages of occasional nuggets of wisdom interspersed with gratuitous insults. Anyone care to summarise the salient points? Please?:)

In my opinion most of its complete shite .... Had 2 LC 's now and mine have been perfect ! :D

Ha ha ha. You guys kill me with views. No doubt we are a minority. But I'm rejecting mine after 12 faults and 11 months of trying fixes and having various parts replaced on my bike that keep failing.
Yep, I'm whining. But I've got reason to wouldn't you agree?

Hi ,i am on my second lc and gearbox is still the same !!! the bike is awesome ,but let down by the lower gear changes ,the dealer said there is nothing wrong and they are all like it !! but has i have said many times there is a fundemental design fault somewhere in the transmission ,recently tried triumph ,the BMW 90t that uses the old boxer system, and all ok , some of the comments say that there is no problem ,but in over 50 years and over 40 bikes never had this before ,especaily on a £14k state of art machine , tried the new LT with the pro shift and this certainly improves the up changes , me thinks that this is BMW s way of getting around the design fault ??

I wouldn't say that it is a design 'fault' per se, it is just the way it has turned out i.e. a 'characteristic' and a small number of people really don't like this particular 'characteristic'. The older dry clutch models just had different 'characteristics', for example the problem with finding 1st gear when the dogs were not aligned - one had to 'spin' the box a little by creating a bit of clutch drag by engaging the clutch slightly.

I would prefer less clutch drag on my LC but it really is not an issue once one adapts and after 15,000 miles I don't give it a second thought :)

I find it really difficult to understand why some people find it it almost impossible to accept that there are owners who are having gearbox/clutch problems with their bike?

If you would accept gears mashing together before they properly engage as "character" then that's your entitled opinion.Personally I'd call it a fault.

Perhaps your bike does not experience this problem and for that I'm pleased, but I can assure you it is not down to your superior riding skills and knowledge which you consistantly appear to suggest.

For goodness sake man just accept that there are folks who are having genuine problems and are becoming increasingly frustrated at the length of time it is taking the manufacturer to sort out.

Out of the 100+ bikes I have owned in the last 40 years 25 or so have been BMW's and I've yet to own one with a gearchange as poor as my current WC.

Having owned many motorcycles over the last 30yrs or so, 3x v twins,3x boxers, loads of single cylinder, and a dozen or so 4x cylinder jap bikes i would have to say the worst gearboxes belonged to the 3xboxers. All these bikes were a completely different ride, including the" charicteristics "of the gearbox. Any rider given the oppurtunity to ride a bmw boxer for the first time will jump of said machine and tell you the gearbox is " crap"-like a tractor. They do take some getting used to but of the three boxers i have owned the "lc"has the sweeter gearbox. The hp2 sport box was very clunky apart from upshifts using the quickshifter which made the gearbox suprisingly smooth. Maybe after all said it may be the overall design of the clutch rather than gearbox design which is upsetting some owners. Preloading the gearlever before shifting and little use of the clutch work best for me and i guess just tuning into the bike ride after ride. No good tho if you cant select first gear . Are bmw really working on a fix? I dont think so....

HI Steve glad at least we agree it is not acceptable ,we should be able to change gear without planning and grating gears on a 2014 state of the art motorcycle and not say its just a BMW !!!
