Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

I am constantly surprised by the noddy level of questions that come up on the web site and which make it obvious that the questioner doesnt know a camshaft from a conroid and relies on a dealer to do any mechanical work.

Why are you surprised? Should everyone that owns a motorcycle be a mechanic, or know how to work on an engine?:nenau

I was chatting with one of my mates at a Buell meeting this last weekend and he just happened to mention that another of his friends crashed when his camchain broke and locked the gearbox, I don't know if the guy is a member on here but apparently he was given a new bike by BMW .

So, you were down the pub, and a friend of a friend crashed the death trap, and was given another one by BMW to say sorry?:blagblah:rolleyes:

It was told to me as an unsolicited fact by a guy that I'd trust to only ever tell the truth , he told me because he knows that as well as my Buells that I own a GS.
But some people will never believe BMW are shit even when they've had to have their own bike replaced.

Exactly, why should there be a reason to disbelieve?

How many have you purchased...??

Remind me...:D

I haven't ever purchased any because a bloke down the pub told me they were shit :D

In fact Buells were so bloody great that Harley dumped them.

Syncromesh: I was talking to an automatic transmission specialist today (on another job) and described the symptoms in this thread.(I DID tell him that it is a manual motorcycle gearbox) "Your oil is too thick," he immediately replied. "It stops the synchromesh spinning properly"
Any possibility that he could be correct?

No Syncromesh on GS WC gearboxes, all cars have them & he is correct that too thick or the wrong grade of oil in the gearbox can stop the Syncromesh working correctly..
But not fitted so in this case irrelevant..

this guy works on gearboxes and doesn't know that motorcycle gearboxes do not have synchros ?

is he any good ?

Hang on a minute ... What makes you believe that the wc has no synchromesh ? Are you any good? : I know that he is very good!
.
To quote the official BMW 'Unstoppable' literature: ' The six speed synchromesh gearbox is built into the engine housing, saving space cutting weight and further enhancing the riding experience'
http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/us/en/f...MWMotorradUSA_Enduro_MY2013_R1200GS_Flyer.pdf

There's lots of of literature all stating 'Six-speed synchromesh gearbox built into crankcase'
Similar statements are made in literature for F800GS and G650 GS so what's with the condescending ' everyone knows' attitude ?
True or false , synchro or no synchro ????????

They absolutely, definitely don't have synchro. All manual motorbike gearboxes are constant mesh dog boxes in which pairs of meshed gears slide along the shafts, engaging dogs on adjacent gear pairs - look it up. BMW probably describe it as 'synchro' for the hard of thinking who can't understand how bike gearboxes work.

However, too thick or wrong oil (or more likely in this case, a bad clutch design) could affect the operation of the wet clutch, making it drag too much and impeding smooth dog engagement. However some drag is important in a conventional wet clutch integral gearbox to enable dependable shifts but it has to be 'just right'.

Literature quote.. Also the blurb says Helical Syncromesh, misleading as gears are still Dog engagement.. But a first in motorcycle gearbox design..
"The engine drives through a six-speed gearbox with the usual dog engagement in preference to the synchromesh system found in cars. The gearbox is
designed as a separate module which can be removed without the need to split the engine crankcase. Rather
than being straight-cut in common with most other motorcycles, the
gears are helical like those in a car transmission. This design is quieter and leads to a lighter gear shift, both
significant benefits for a touring bike."

But if course I could be wrong.. Comments peeps..?

How's the gearbox & clutch now on the 2014/15 models?

Any good?

Better?

Having just taken a test ride on one I would say no. That, the racket from the engine and the generally plasticky feel didn't impress me at all. It did go well though................................. :D

Is going 'well enough'.............enough though?

For some maybe, it is

Does the 'newness shine' wear off and you get used to it?

The extra performance is nice but in itself would not make me want to change. The electronics I could live without (my 08 has none, not even ABS). Although strangely I did like the cruise control. I didn't feel that anything else was an improvement over the earlier bikes. Also, I wouldn't buy anything that hasn't been around for 2/3 years and had the bugs ironed out.
My genuine response to the sales guy afterwards was that it made me realise what a great bike I already have :thumb2
