Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

Cars and bikes? not comparable they are different things, silly to compare them.

Bikes use more fuel - drag coefficient and acceleration - fuel efficient bikes are slower than cars, where's the fun in that.

The LC is more fuel efficient than the previous GSs and faster, so stop complaining :D

No it's not an unfair comparison

Bikes are getting more fuel efficient, some more than others

If BMW can do better mpg with the F8GS, then why not with the WC

Any engine improvements they made in terms of more efficient combustion have been wasted because the new WC weighs about 15-20kg more than the outgoing model

Where's the sense in that?

The WC should be averaging 65mpg or more

My bike is going in at the beginning of October to have the modifications. I get the clunk into first, just like everyone, but since the 6k service, I now get the occasional eye watering shift from 3rd to 4th, under hard acceleration. I asked the service chap if this mod will be done on all of the new WC's, and he said yes.:rob

I do like the look of the Multistrada!:P:hide

I think that we need a whingers thread so that all of those who prefer to whinge can live their sad lives together and then us happy non-whingers can pass them by :D

Straight from BMW's resident forum mouthpiece!

Since my 1st service every time I check my oil on what ever surface it fills the glass window. Guess I need to get the dealer to drain some off??

Changes worse as well clonks going up and down box!

You Sirry Iriot

Hope I'm not being arrogant but........

"Just Do It" FFS. :rob. Yes every last one of you with gearbox problems:thumb2

If your LC currently suffers from poor gear changes do something proactive and lower engine oil level to half way up site glass (when hot after 5 mins stopped on centre stand) and remove clutch master cylinder cover and make sure the fluid level is not over full.

As I've said before my bikes gear change was good before 1st service and poor after I am now convinced this was due to too much oil in the engine, this combined with the clutch fluid being too full and causing the hydraulics to baulk :nenau

Mileage to date 4500

I've been out tonight and tried super fast changes accelerating hard as if in race mode surprisingly these were perhaps the best changes. The worst being1st 2nd 3rd holding revs at say 7,000 then changing up I think you would expect this and I only did this in the interests of research:eek

If I up shift in my normal riding mode which is moderate revs smooth but fast progress the gear change is near perfect:clap finding neutral is not a problem.

I also adjusted the clutch blade position to closest to the bar which I would have thought would open clutch plates the least but this had no negative effect apart from trapping my little pinkies between bar n blade.

Don't take my word for it make the fluid adjustments try it yourself and report back:thumb

None of the above changed clunk and lurch when going into 1st but if the engine would tick over at a slightly lower RPM this may improve this very unpleasant and annoying feature.

Mine has less oil than before the service (BMW has issued the EXACT required measurement of oil to all service departments), and now this problem has developed.:blast I hasten to add that its not all the time, and if I apply extra pressure when changing from 3 to 4, it doesn't do it, but the fact that it does it at all needs to be sorted.:rob

So what else did they do? Seems very odd you ride in all ok they drop oil and refill with same type but slightly less oil you ride home with poor shift!

Did they bleed clutch or adjust level or lever throw? Gear lever linkage :nenau

I would ask technician what exactly was done to your bike.

I don't know but will find out when it goes back in.:thumb

Dunno why the parallel twin is more fuel efficient, perhaps there is something inherent in the way a parallel twin works compared to a boxer, greater crankcase pumping losses perhaps as both pistons try simultaneously to move a bigger mass of air?

My LC only weighs about 7kgs more than my twin-cam, if that, don't know where you get 15-20 from.

YEH Best of luck with that.

I think that the good changes are when the engine speed and gear box speed are matched to your gear change speed A bit like what you would be trying to achieve with a double declutch.
So with the speed you change gear there will only be a limited rev range that will give you a clean change.
At least that's the conclusion I have come up with for the poor change from 3rd to 4th

Bike now has 8400mls on it and I have done a deal in principal on a GSA LC for next year. That's my solution and fix for the shite gear change, I can only hope that a years real development will improve matters.

Unbelievable that it has to be you, the customer, who makes good the situation...

One born every minute:blast..................so chuck another couple of grand at it, to swap to a new GSA WC bike, at your expense and see if it is any better:confused:

BMW have made some damn good bikes over the years....................sadly the new generation doesn't live up to past BMW motorcycling glories

Sure, the new bikes are more technologically advance, more bhp, loaded with more aids and gizmos......................but better built, not a fecking chance

There's nothing in the current BMW Motorrad range that excites me, whatsover:tears

My R100RT is 34 years old...

It's still going strong, has almost no corrosion, and I don't have to measure the oil out like I'm a research scientist...

The reason it's lasted is that it was built well, using good materials.

Simple really :thumby:
