Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

All you say is very true, and I for one am so glad my bike is fine so far. and hope all those that have the gearbox problem get them sorted. I still wonder what the root cause is because there are clearly bikes out there with no issues and then ones that have yet have the same parts and obviously some would have the same build dates. (Mine was built in May, & currently 8000 miles)

I personally think it will be a clutch issue. I would also assume BMW will be working on the problem, however it does seem to be going on a bit too long.
I shall definitely be buying the new GSA on the basis of how good my WC is, but to be honest if my bike had, had problems I would change brand.

Assumption.....the mother of all feck ups:D

They may just be waiting for the warrantees to all run out and fix the 2014 bike by making it an auto :augie

The GSA is already in production so engine wise its the same as the 2014 apart from the flywheel, so if the GS still suffers with issues so will the GSA.
However after nearly 1000 posts regarding these issues, i do think some bods may pick up on the fact that if they go and spit there dummy out complaining of said issues, regardless if the issues are in there head or they actually do have these they may get to upgrade to the GSA because it seems there's a few whom now want a GSA over a GS, so makes sense paying only the difference rather than losing ££££ in depreciation !

I'm not familiar with videos or editing, but I borrowed a GoPro as a last resort, to try to show BMW why I'm unhappy. This was a short half-hour ride and I just tried to edit some footage.
Got my bike in May and have had 2 new cluches, a new pushrod and the hydraulic fluid lowered, all to not much improvement.
So only having a suction clamp I managed to take some video with the camera in 2 positions on the tank. The sound could be better but the crunches on some of the changes are audible(although the kick-back through
your foot isn't there). 2nd up to 3rd is bad a couple of times and down changes are bad sometimes.
I sent this to BMW UK, who passed the buck back to Southport. They have contacted Germany and next week the bike is going back in for further inspection. Checking the master cylinder operates OK, checking no water in the system,
checking the clutch plates for heat damage, a whole list of stuff which I can't remember.
My question here ,being none technical, is when the gear change crunches it feels like cogs not properly engaging and grinding over each other, then they clunk into position. Is this a clutch problem or is there a selector in the gearbox, which could be getting damaged?

'Cogs' are NOT grinding it's the dogs on the gear shafts that are engaging with a 'clunk' so you are NOT grinding away the 'cogs' - don't worry. If you want a smooth down change just give the engine a little blip before you select the next gear and you will find that 99% of the 'clonk' goes away :)

Chippy Wood of Bike Magazine basically said that the gearbox was a little notchy he did NOT say it was crap - he's description was spot on. He had put 8,000 miles on the bike so even allowing for journalistic licence his comments do have some validity.

The guy who did that video was changing gear very naively in my opinion - one has to adapt to a bikes characteristics, they are all different! I reckon that if he 'blipped' the throttle a tad on down changes then most of his issues would go away.

P.S. the clonking in my opinion is entirely down to a little too much clutch drag, whether or not BMW can do anything about it without causing clutch slip I don't know but I am sure that they are looking into it.

Really ?
From BMW to me:

":blagblah:blagblah:blagblah
clutch pressure piece part replaced, this may tend to improve the disengagement behaviour of the clutch and therefore the shiftability.

:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

BMW are aware that your bike is experiencing a poor shift.
If further work produces service measures BMW will inform the dealers of which path to take !!!

Regards,
Hans"

So , I have a letter from BMW in which they admit there is a issue . Also they work to remedy the issue.
So to all the experts, doubters etc. Is official :THERE IS A PROBLEM
Still, I started to get used to it as it is:blast

Perhaps if BMW had made the bike so you could have an engine oil in the engine and a gearbox oil in the gearbox, then it wouldn't have been too much of the issue/problem/fault/dilemma it is turning into

A gearchange that is hard to operate and one that in the longer term will maybe cause undue wear and tear - this is not a minor problem................................. it's a big flaw

It's pretty off putting to a lot of current owners and will maybe affect sales in future

There is a video somewhere of a bloke riding a 1150GS around the Isle of Man and you can hear the gearbox clonk each time he changes gear

The GS has topped the sales charts every single month since March when the LC was released - 7 months in a row - not bad for a bike with a 'crap' gear box ;)

Yup and we should all eat shit too, as two million flies cant be wrong.

And which department of BMW do you work for? they should sack you and employ a proper transmission engineer LOL

I don't work for BMW - the figures didn't come from BMW they come from UK MCIA the industry's association - if the gearbox was that bad (apart from a few broken ones) then how come so many people are buying this bike and not whinging?

Paul, hasn't just paid £14k for it though:D

It's still got a clonky gearbox though - in fact the 1150 was always slated for its agricultural gearbox as well as being underpowered and overweight ;) some of then do have nice shiny black tanks though :D

It was only slated by mard arse riders of sports bikes. The 1150 box is snickerty boo for those of us who expect a bike to be a bike and not a sewing machine :D

Under powered and overweight is every GS ever produced including the LC. Ride a Busa or for that matter a modern 600, either will waste a GS easily. If power was a deal breaker, the bike wouldn't sell a single unit.

Every bike ever made by BMW has had complaints about the gearbox, as far back as 1932. Same goes for being underpowered and the excess weight.

I must be one of the few lucky ones. :aidan My LC hasnt got a clunky gearbox, it isnt under-powered nor is it overweight. Happy.
