Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

Getting back to the original problem of gear changes ,is there any body that has got a problem bike had any modifications/replacement parts fitted that has cured the problem .

I'd put money on there not being - I asked almost the same question some time ago and didn't get a reply, so either they 'adapted' to the 'problem' or sold their bikes???????????

Yes I had a problem bike, yes the dealer has fixed it.

See post #911ish back on the 2nd November when I replied saying that my bike was fixed.

I had a meeting today with a couple of chaps from BMW HQ, and when we discussed the terrible gear changes on some bikes, they said that it is a clutch issue and not a gearbox issue, and that BMW are still working on a fix, for the bikes that still have issues.:rob:thumb

Bravo! Well done,sir.

Had mine fixed last week as already mentioned... So far so good. Clutch biting point is closer than before, much better experience.
Been liaising with BMW customer services about the bike and the problems so far and some minor compensation coming my way.

Pidcocks did a good job getting me sorted so quickly and they said mine was the 5th or 6th bike to have been done there so far.

I was thinking about getting a quickshifter to fix the issue. There is no clunking whatsoever when you don't use the clutch to change gear

I'm going to speak to bmw to check it won't invalidate the warranty first

My bike i returned had one fitted and It never invalidated mine, and I've been given a new bike because of my issues and it will be fitted to this new one as well.

Tbh why should it ! The new RT wc is available with a quickshifter, they probably offered it to prevent some of the clunking and clanking.

I'm not sure, but I read somewhere about mods some invalidating the warranty, I'm not sure where though

Which qs did you fit?

No it is a sign of the times, it was fitted for those who don't know how to change gear correctly - which rather surprisingly seems to be the majority of motorcyclists these days ;)

Think it would take more than a quick shifter for some.....!

Blipping the throttle

A couple of pages back, some people were stressing the importance of blipping the throttle for a clunk-free gear change and it got me a bit confused.

I can certainly see that rev-matching to avoid lurching or locking the backwheel is necessary, but I have always considered the order to be:

Clutch in
Shift gear
Blip throttle
Clutch out

After all, with the clutch pulled, unless it's dragging, why should increasing the revs make a difference to the transmission dogs?

However, the posts mentioned above sent me scurrying to google, and there are just as many people saying that the order should be :

Clutch in
Blip throttle
Shift gear
Clutch out

I'm just intrigued why one would want to blip before the shift. I know it's all very quick, but I would have thought the time you want the revs matched is when you dump the clutch, and not necessarily when you move the shifter.

I hope someone can educate me and make my gear changes ever better. :)

Because the clutch does drag, so blipping the throttle with the clutch lever pulled to the bar forces the clutch plates to rotate relative to one another and seems to reduce the drag, maybe it 'spins' out some of the oil? - but whatever it does it definitely reduces the 'clonks' greatly.

P.S. with me the blip action and gear change is so quick that it all happens simultaneously :D

Thanks guys.

I've been out for a few hours over the last few days, taking a bit more care with the shifts and practicing the rev-matching. I never really had a problem with the clutch or gearbox, but it was always a negative with the bike. Now, with a bit of deliberate practice and a shade over 1000 miles I actually think it's a good, firm shift and my niggle with the gear-change is pretty much gone. I'm enjoying the bike more than ever.

Shame the roads are being salted next week.... :(

Good luck to those with lingering problems - I do hope you get them resolved.

I am often lurking around Bedfordshire (Tempsford) at the weekends - so if you see a Red LC with panniers and a roll bag on the bag, follow me and listen for the clonks and crunches from my gearbox :D

P.S. don't worry about the salt just regularly wash the bike and spray on some Scotoiler FS365 and ride it :D

I'll keep an eye, and ear, out for you! :)

I plan to keep riding through the winter. I always use ACF50 on my bikes but this autumn I invested in a Bosch paint sprayer and it does a brilliant job of atomising the ACF50 for really good coverage. You're welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a spray!! :D

Whereabouts in Bedfordshire are you, N,S,E or W?

I rode the first Demo A&S got in. Up, down, finding neutral and every gear was just junk. Loved it otherwise and will have one once it's sorted. Sounds like maybe 2014 model could be it.

I have new 2014 model the problem is exactly the same

crap gearbox

HI , just had mine back from dealer for gear change to be sorted out again !!! ,had re mapping done ????
guess what NO DIFFERENT !!! that's oil levels done ,clutch replaced , clutch pushrod replaced ,master cylinder checked ,slave cylinder checked ,gear lever extention , clutch lever tried various , done 6500 miles .
