Having recently changed my job, and no longer needing to use either my pick-up or van for commuting. I decided to look around for an alternative daily. I had more or less decided a Volvo S60 would suit my needs admirably and set about looking for one. Well, long story short the cost of tax, insurance etc although cheaper than my previous commercial insurance was still the wrong side of £600. Fortunately my ever financially aware, long suffering partner asked if I had considered using my classic car? Clever girl, no I hadn't. Fuel costs would be broadly similar to my pick up truck, servicing costs are minimal as a trained chimp could service it. And the insurance cost, Fully comp, SDP. Limited 5000 mileage, Breakdown, legal, windscreen etc, ULEZ, LEZ exempt too. :DD And the cost to insure this 2.6 litre, 6 cylinder, manual trans, 5 seater monster? Amazed.:) Oh! That wasn't the cheapest either, but I hadn't heard of the two insurers with the lower quotes.

Bargain!

I pay forty odd quid just for breakdown insurance on my bike policy!

I love those
Are they any good?
Provided you drive it like a 60 year old car yes! Obviously if it's a stock car with cross ply tyres, a dynamo and single speed wipers then it will be a bit of a departure from a modern car to say the least. Steering is a bit of a culture shock to anyone brought up with PAS. Cornering can be entertaining, and cross ply tyres vague at best. That said, mine has a few modern add ons, 2 speed wiper motor, electronic ignition, radial tyres and halogen lights. which make it a little more user friendly. It will cruise happily at 70 - 75 on the motorway and not even raise a sweat. And the ride quality is sublime. Apparently they were known as the working mans Rolls back in the day.

When I was captain of Drayton Primary School football team aged 10/11 our coach was a Mr East who was also head of maths. He drove a P4 and carried half of the team to away matches in it. Lovely motors, with a Captain Mainwaring kind of vibe. During my search for a classic car I spotted what appears to be a stunning example down the road from me in Ely. Top dollar, but may be worth it.

Tidy looking. Not sure on the price. I paid 3K for mine with original paint and as solid as a rock. I ummed and ahh'd about giving the old girl a respray, but despite the paint actually falling off the ally panels, I keep thinking it's only original once so I'll leve it be for the time being.
Prices vary wildly and don't always reflect the true condition. Still plenty out there to choose from. If a P4 really interests you, join the P4 Guild (Not the FB page) for advice and usually some good cars for sale at realistic prices. (y)
