Helicopter tape

Hi Cherokee
Try helicopter tape from convertape.com iit comes in various widths and lengths .It goes on clear and does not yellow .

cheap'n'cheerful

buy a roll from Hein Gericke .... or go see a friendly sign maker in your locale : )

not cheap though, and to be honest, shit will over time get behind it, or anything for that matter

and it will rust behind it

how's that going to happen? it's glued on

rust? :confused::confused:

got something similar on my airhead tank. tricky to apply on compound curves, but should be very effective.

had some on my ipod for a couple of years. i just sling it in my pocket with keys, change, whatever, and it's unmarked.

no rust on it either :D

i was wondering the same....

On compound curves use a hot air gun to take the creases out.

Cherokee: if you need some I am back at work on saturday and can see if we have spare rolls. i can send u some A4 sheets if HG doesnt have any. PM me in that case.

it's quite easy to stretch it a little to get around some curves, but it's where you end up with excess that the real problem starts.

TBH if i did it again straight after, i think i could have got it better, but it's good enough, and will do it's job.

i think practise makes perfect.

it's expensive and time consuming. took ages to make the pattern. the piece extends either side of the filler to stop the forward straps chafing.

i needed it to go under this krieger tank bag adapter.

a few small air bubbles & went a bit wonky down the r/h/s, which i did first. but did the second side better (practise makes nearly perfect).

i decided to do two pieces to cover the decals. these get the colour worn off them really quickly off road and then look rather tatty, spoiling the entire bike.
these were much easier to do & look better with them as they are slightly more glossy than the originals :)

Why bother

I have used a BMW tank bag for four years. It has been grossly overloaded and used on two round Europe trips plus countless trips in the UK. When I sold the bike there was not a mark on the tank.

Just make sure the tank and the underside of the bag is clean and grit free, then there is no problem.

true, if you stay on the tarmac :)

i had that tankbag harness fitted to the bike for one morning off road, and had marks that were a bastard to polish out :(

If you guys are serious about saving your paintwork ... go see a sign shop that can do 'wrap'. if they can save the paintwork on a Aston or Lambo doing the Cannonball run - they can do your tanks :)

google it....

look for a company called William Smith from Glasgow . The sell a vinyl that looks and feels like carbon fibre... a Youtube search will find it - watch them 'wrap' a Mini Wing Mirror.... they don't come much more compound than that.

p.s its £30 a linear metre (1200mm width)

I used the adhesive clear film on my tank for about four years and it worked very well. As the film that I had wouldn't form around the curves, it was a bit of work to cut it into panels that would cover the tank panel and side plates.
But I've removed it now and will replace it using this idea.

I used Ventureshield on my 1100. http://www.bodyguarduk.com/ They do a pre cut set for that bike which comprises a 'tank pad' section, one either side in the knee cutouts and two pieces for the front edge of the tank.

It goes on pretty easy and you use wet solution and a squeegie to get it right (no instant stick like vinyl) BUT the bit on my tank that was getting scuffed- top front where the buckles for my Wolfman tank bag go-aren't covered so I made up my own patterns by using masking tape on the tank and then drawing on that. This worked well, and I think if I were doing it again I'd just buy a metre of the stuff and cut it to suit myself. The film is very clear, but of course you can still see the edges. Why BMW don't lacquer their not metallic painted tanks is a mystery to me, but there you go.
