Very sad news this evening that Clery's will no longer be trading, retail has become scary in last few years.
Most Dubs have met their date under the clock for decades.

Rumours are strong a hotel group has secured the building.

You'd have to feel for the 400+ staff this evening.

It's terrible sad. My dear mother knew every corner of the place. I remember the tubes that the money went into to go to somewhere only to reappear with the change and receipt. I loved the idle chit chat while waiting. Roumors of a hotel? Is that what it was at one time? Will be missed. There will be hell sorting it all out. JJH

I worked in Arnotts in 1979 as an "apprentice" salesman. Even back then Clerys was seen as a poor relation in the retail industry. They never caught up.

Our house is hoping john Lewis will take it over. They were interested in opening up a store on Oconnell street a few years ago. Fingers crossed, John Lewis is a great dept store.

Awful news for the employees. Heart goes out to them...

Irish Times today reported that ground floor - retail and floors above offices. :nenau
Feel for the staff - talk about a shock.
As for the rest of us - i fear for the city centre, it shows signs of going the way of many U.K. town centres; slow death by badly planned 'best intentions'.
By the time that has come about and a there's a desire to fix it, there's no budget left to spend and nothing left to revive.
Seem the plans for more 'pedestrian zones'?

Dublin City Council is aiming to ban cars from much of the centre of the Irish capital and is also aiming for cycling to account for 15 per cent of journeys there by 2017.

Under plans unveiled last week by the council and the Republic of Ireland’s National Transport Authority (NTA), the north and south quays alongside the River Liffey as well as College Green will only be accessible by people on bike or foot or by public transport.

The plans which were revealed this week in the Dublin City Centre Transport Study will also see St Stephen’s Green North and Suffolk Street turned into pedestrian zones.
