Clicking instead of starting

repaired for e110,( no assesment but got the old bits with magnet off and armature chewed up), just wondering, where did he get the bits to repair, and/or should I have got a new one?

Its a common starter in the car world so spares are not hard to find in Europe.

Starter failed again yesterday, fortunatly had the missus with me to push, not a happy camper. anyone any comments on the nippondenso?

Hi John,
How long have you been using ND? any other comments, and did you get it from Motorworks?
D

I got mine in the US... friend brought it back in his suitcase:)

I never even notice its there now 'cos it just works. Only been in about 18 months though.
The rational for getting the ND was:
1.) good price in the US as the Euro was so strong and
2.) my mates Valeo let go the day we left for India and mine required a rebuild in India.

Its not so much that the Valeo breaks as you can mend them cheaply/easily, its just the inconvenience of when the :censor: decides to break.

Hi

I am not very impressed with your friend who overhauled the Valeo a couple of months ago. Didn't he offer a guarantee?

The Valeo starter is designed to be light and cheap, this is at the expense of reliability. It is easy to overhaul and parts are available and relatively cheap.

If you were local I would ask you to pop around and I would strip it in front of you and give you a quote to replace whatever is faulty.

I have had my R100GS 15 years and I repaired its Valeo twice. When it recently failed the third time I replaced it with a Nippon Denso from Motorworks. Ridiculously expensive, but I expect it to outlast me.

starter

Hi steve,
thanks for your offer, I have been giving this a bit of head scratching, I opened up the casing , and sure enough the magnets had come adrift. I was wondering if the fact that I have very high, 925cca, power odesay battery putting extra stress on the starter, It made it very easy starting ie spins fast with lots of power for a good spark. My concern is as in my first post, lost confidence, I like to explore lanes and tracks, usualy on my own to see if they are "goers" or go through, and in some of the places that I have stalled or stopped it would have been impossible to bump start:tears. I'm sure if bring back the starter to the repair guy, he will be reasonable:augie. but is it going to happen again and again? I have never kickstarted a BMW, not on mine.
Kickstart conversion and cheap starters or ND?:nenau

Hi

The battery does not put a load on the starter.

When the Valeo fails one or more magnets come off the starter body. When this happens you can replace the whole starter body, stick the magnet back on with a high temperature adhesive, stick it on and reinforce with clips between the magnets or drill the magnet and screw it on (or do a combination of these)

What makes no sense is to stick one magnet back on and not do anything about the others since they are all likely to go within a few months.

You can get a replacement body with new magnets for $45 plus shipping here. http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/Valeo_and_Bosch_Original_Equipment_New_Starters_s/3.htm

Have you checked the earth connection to the starter motor?

Very easy to diagnose. Simply connect a jump lead from the negative battery terminal to the casing of the starter motor. If the bike fires up then you have a poor earth.

Thanks again Steve,
that seems like a good price for parts, didnt check shipping costs. The same parts must be available a lot closer, ie is it the same as any car part that i might get in a motor factor, I found on a previous R65, the "black box" was a very common car part, and a fraction of the bmw price.

when my starter packed up (dropped its magnets) i got a starter from a scrap yard iirc it was off a 1.2 corsa any D6Ra starter wil do ( a few vauxhals mostly the 1.2 engine most small shitrons and peugots among others). you have to swap the bits over because the bit with the reduction gear is diferent but the actual motor, brushes and solenoid etc are interchangeable, so with a little search around a scrap yard (found mine in 10 mins) and an hour of spannering you can have a working starter for around £20. thats the cheap option if you want it :thumb2

Hi Dermott

I dont know anyone else who does the reinforced body, though others on this site may have come across a source. http://www.auto-elektrik.de does a standard body for €40 + $19 p&p

Most car factors only do complete starters. I'm told modern Valeos no longer have a tendancy to drop magnets, so a body from a fairly recent car may be OK.
