Hi all,

I'd would appreciate your comments on the following.

As some of you may know, a faulty neutral gear switch forced the bike to be left at Prestige London and was driven back to Paris two days ago by a chauffeur.

The next day, I heard , for the first time a slight but clear clicking/ticking noise from the left cylindre. I stopped by BMW dealer in Paris and they confirmed they heard it , and asked if I had used octane 98 petrol. I checked the receipt from teh delivery guy saw that he used 98 grade indeed.

BMW also suggested it could be a slightly loose valve rocker, but did not seemed worried at all and said there was no need to bring the bike in if the noise did not worsen.

The next tank fuel, I obviously used the proper 95 grade petrol, but it did not entirely cure the noise.

2 questions if I may :

1- what happens if you use 98 petrol ?
2 - should I worry more about a loose valve rocker and take the bike in anyway ?

Thank you for your assistance.

1- you may go faster as a result of being lighter in pocket. otherwise, nothing.

2- no, unless it's very noticable.

Hi there... My 1200gs has always let off a clicking/ticking sound! (both sides) Been back to the dealers twice.. they reckon its just the healthy sound of the valves!! TBH I have got so used to it now I don't notice anymore... and the bike goes like a bullet!!

I live in Mexico, and the petrol over here is 87, and nothing happens really just some minor loss of power. When power is needed, I ussually add some octane booster.

Worry if there is no noise!. This probably means that valves are to tight, and are not opening/closing completely. Usually noise increases when the bike is hot. If you bike really makes a lot of noise ask your mechanic to do a valve adjustment. This must be done when the bike is completly cold, so this means that you will have to leave the bike with your dealer and wait at least one day.

Good Luck

 if the engine is running and the bike is on its side the "uphill" cylinder can make a racket......
