Hi there,

I have just joined the forum as am really keen on buying this bike on eBay, I am about to put a deposit on it but thought first I'd better get you guys to advise me.

The seller was happy for me to test ride it, I'm 6ft 2 so the height wasn't a problem.

It rode beautifully but I did notice when pulling the clutch in and out (feathering it) there was a slight 'clunk' could this be the shaft drive engaging, do they all do it? It was only very slight, couldn't really feel it / hear it but was aware of it.

Other than that, it has 21,000 miles and all the paper work plus the luggage. Also it was non ABS which I'm actually happy about as other people have said that can go faulty. It doesn't have ESA either. If there anything else common that I should check for? Is the fuel strip a common problem? If so how much to replace?

The ad and guy seemed genuine, I'd appreciate anyone else's advise, I'm going to put deposit down tomorrow

Welcome to the site Dave :thumb2

It looks a nice clean bike at a good price..is it a private sale? What's your gut feeling?

Sometimes you can read too much about stuff like fuel strips etc...not sure what you mean about the clutch issue....

Does it look like it's been looked after, check the front engine cover , if it's got little or no corrosion it's a plus point....any movement sideways on the back wheel...anything you can think of cold be a bargaining chip over the price

Thanks Bryn and can I say this site is amazing, have read tonnes of useful stuff and have only been here an hour.

I got it up on the main stand and had a good ol wiggle of the rear wheel, it seems smooth with no play. From looking at the front engine cover it looked typical for the overall condition, weathered but not corroded.

The clutch was probably normal, it was just a slight physical clunk. I doubt he'd have let me ride it if there was an issue.

Yes it's a private sale, h e would only budge £50 on the price so am hoping it's a good price for an 09. Overall feeling is genuine, I haven't seen all the paper work yet but once I have I'll be happy to put a deposit down.

Hi David. It's a non abs version. I was thinking this was a good thing as one less thing to go wrong?

Im pretty sure the 24K service is quite expensive maybe £450 ish. Someone will be along with the exact numbers im certain.
Just maybe worth considering!
Good luck with it anyways.

Ooh ok that's good to know! I've heard there's a local independent bmw servicing outfit in holmfirth near me. I might ring them tomorrow and ask about this. Thanks for the heads up!

I used to feel a slight clicking when using the clutch lever on my 2006 1200GS. I had the bike from new and I think the slight clicking was there from new, it never caused a problem. I did 95000 Miles on the bike before someone in car rear ended me on the motorway writing the bike off! Really disappointed as wanted to reach 100K miles.
Never had a problem with the clutch, although it was changed under warranty due to failing oil seal (common on early GS).

Dry Miles ?

Sorry to be a killjoy. 21,000 dry miles. look at the headers. Did this person and the previous owner/s drive 21,000 miles EH! indoors. Sorry so many adverts for bikes state dry miles. Twiddly twat fibbers. Hope I have not offended you. I have an 09 adventure registered 11/04/09 and has led indicators as standard this one does not, maybe something to checkout. Hope you get what you want.
Denis.

looks a nice bike and a really good price..i recall that LED indicators where 100 quid extra because mine came with the ones like ures..if unlike me he wasn't anal about his header cleaning they would go like that..all they need is a sesh on a buffer and they will be like new

If you can stretch it go for the twin cam engine 2010+ You want the ABS.
GS or GSA is personal choice but GSA would be mine.
And welcome to the site

No, not offended, welcome the advice, no matter how 'straight talking' it is!

I've had a slight change of plan. Decided I didn't need the larger tank range but did want a few more on road luxuries, so have gone for this one instead, or I will be tomorrow for a viewing.

From the pics this one certainly seems very clean, with plenty of extra's which is always good; haven't looked at the other one yet.....
