Hi Guys, Ive posted on the gear selection thread here, but I seriously suspect that Im in a bit more trouble than that, and as a new GSer Id appreciate the your views.

Ive gat a 51 plate 1150GS, in Mandarin as it happens, and its totally gorgeous. Ive had my test a godd 15years, and bar an XR600 I had years ago, haven't bothered with it.
Post divorce, Ive come to the conclusion that Ive got to live a little.
I had to sell a 993 to pay the solicitors. Ouch. In fact, big ouch.
I work in Fulham, so thought why not get a GS, Ive always loved them, just been a bit sensible.
Anyway, to cut a long story a bit short Ive vbeen riding it for about for weeks, when yesterday it wouldn't go across zero [N] into 2, from 1.
Unless you were ragging 1st a bit, and flicked quickly, or pushed the pivot up hard with your heel.
Theres a lot of up movement when in zero [N] from zero to 2nd it won't engage, and prior to this jumped out of 2 a few times.
Moving the pivot moves the spline on the gearbox significantly.
Ive bopoked it into Vines in Caterham.
Could this possibly be a linkage issue.
Getting the box in and out theyve quoted as six hours, is that about right?
Clutch wise, should I get them to drop in a plate or kit when the gearbox is out.

Has anyone had this jumping out of 2nd/ inability to engage second because of throw issue and has advive.
Any views welcome guys.

GSshop is up the road from you in putney, you could've popped it in for a quick look and i'd have been able to tell you what the problem could be. .

Do this Stuttgartmetal - unbook Vines pronto and take it to Putney, where it will receive TLC and the undivided attention of one who knows his onions...:D:thumb

Do this without delay the best move you can make.

So Ive had Vines on the phone.

Weve broken your bike in half.
Weve had the gearbox out.
The intermediate drive shaft shows a lot of wear.
You can either
a. Rebuild your gearbox.
or
b. Put in a new gearbox.

a. £3250 plus
b. £3550 plus.

Have you split the gbox to find out what the problem was, which is what you said you'd do?
You could have given me those two options without taking the box out.

Ermmm, no, we havent split the gearbox.
You'd better come up and we'll let the technician explain.

Any advice?

Seeing as you didn't take the original advice of taking it to St.Eptoes, I think the phrase 'over a barrel' springs to mind here. I'd see how far the bike is in pieces, and how much Vines will charge to put it back to a rideable state, and then get it to Steppers somehow. Even if it means hiring a van and chucking all the bits in the back. I very much think that even if he needs to do what Vines are saying you'll be quids in. Just my 2pennorth.

I don't get it, presumable you joined this site for advice. When it's given and you ignore it you ask for more.

Maybe you want someone to advice you to pay Vines to replace your gearbox. They are half way there already and it wouldn't be fair to deny them of all the money you are going to have to shell out. Let's face it BMW are on the bones of their arse financially and need all the money then can get.

Or you could do the sensible thing and get in touch with Steptoe.

That said you are probably in a world of hurt at the moment and we all feel for you.

What every you choose Good luck.

Ask them about the option of a recon gearbox. They are about £600 from Motorworks. I had one fitted in my 1100, and a clutch, by Cambridge Motorcycles for less than half of what Vines are asking for their two options.

Worth a try, but can't see them going for it.

Vines is a BMW franchise, and all work and parts would have to carry a warranty. That's why the two options are expensive.

The bike was in Vines before anyone posted to bring it anywhere else.
But thanks for the patience, much appreciated.

Ive considered having them refit it all up, so I can bring it elsewhere, Ive also considered having it all bolted up and selling it on, putting the 3 and a half towards a 1200

1150GS gearboxes aren't that easy to come by, and therefore at a premium.
Also, looking at the wear in the box, I was up there this morning, gearboxes aren't the sort of things you want to lock up when riding.
Ive decided to put a new gearbox in it. The bike has 28k on it.
Vines have offered to discount and klower the bill a bit.
Ill post up the final invoice when I have it.
Of course therell be a two year warranty on the clutch and gearbox, and the added security of having done it right.
Id rather have a sorted GS, than a hack.

Vines advised me that the box had been out before, so its possible Ive been shafted buying a lemon that someones tonsed up to sell.
Ill sort it out at the end though.

I would ask Steptoe if he'll take it on. If yes I would ask Vines for the bill to date, collect the bits and deliver it to Steptoe, (Neil). Even if Neil fits a new gearbox he is unlikely to charge anything like the labour that Vines will want. He may also know of a good used box, you can get them from various places.

To put things in perspective if it's not abused an 1150 box should be good for 100,000 miles or so. Mine has been abused and is still good at around 86,000 miles:D.

Good luck.

P.S. Always ask on here before you take it to a dealer.:thumb

Never Mind The Gearbox.

Next time you need anything from a routine service to a rebuild, take it to Neil at The GS Shop. He's 15 mins from you,has favourable labour rates,30 plus years experience with all the right tools & can offer you a free loan bike.
:beerjug:

Fair play, at lease you will have the piece of mind of the two year warranty.

Just hope this is the last of your woes with your bike.
