Clutch and 2nd gear Selection

The bike was in Vines before anyone posted to bring it anywhere else.
But thanks for the patience, much appreciated.

Ive considered having them refit it all up, so I can bring it elsewhere, Ive also considered having it all bolted up and selling it on, putting the 3 and a half towards a 1200

1150GS gearboxes aren't that easy to come by, and therefore at a premium.
Also, looking at the wear in the box, I was up there this morning, gearboxes aren't the sort of things you want to lock up when riding.
Ive decided to put a new gearbox in it. The bike has 28k on it.
Vines have offered to discount and klower the bill a bit.
Ill post up the final invoice when I have it.
Of course therell be a two year warranty on the clutch and gearbox, and the added security of having done it right.
Id rather have a sorted GS, than a hack.

Vines advised me that the box had been out before, so its possible Ive been shafted buying a lemon that someones tonsed up to sell.
Ill sort it out at the end though.[/QUOT

How much for the old box?

Got it back

Just to close this thread Ive got tyhe update.

A bit of to-ing and fro-ing with Vines, I dealt mainly with the lovely Jana, but also Darren, the big cheese.
After a discussion with Darren he dropped the bill to £3500.
In that deal they swallowed the gearbox strip down.
The new box from BMW was £1700. I also bought a clutch assembly, about £350, and drive shaft, £375, the exhaust shroud, and couple od expensive gearbox switches, oil etc.
Darren gave me a decent discount, had the swing arm bushes, and all the others replaced, its like new from the engine back. New gear pivot etc.
Drives like a new bike, and a two year warranty.
I had an enduro helmet off them, with a 15% discount, and they gave me a new GS650 to use whilst it was being repaired.
I was happy at then end of it to pick up the bike today, and it drives so well. After two weeks on a 650 it was good to get back on the big yellow stallion again.
Thanks all for your input. I may well have more money than sense, but then it is sorted.

That is a huge amount of money I am not sure I could allow BMW to do that sort of work for me I would look at a specialist to do it. That said at least you have a bike that now works and have some piece of mind with it.

So is that the whole gearbox but in bits he is selling?

For me that would be something to teach me how a gearbox works if that is so.

Having looked at the photos of the gearbox on ebay, Im of the standing that this gearbox is in a fairly good condition for re-conditioning. Ive seen a lot worse, even chipped teeth and they have run smooth when reassembled.

There may well be a certain amount of wear and tear on the dogs/bearings etc. but my view is that the garage who have done the work, has done it so there will definately be no shortcomings for future breakdowns, ie, changed en-mass ( cover my arse syndrome).

I too am of the full opinion that Steppers would have been able to do a similar job of repairing the box without the over inflated charges. Pity he wasnt offered the work.

As for being advertised for sale on ebay, even if you aquired it for >£250 it wouldnt be money wasted if your looking to do up as a spare or to learn from. Resale/re-use wouldnt be a problem if done correctly.
