Clutch - diagnosis by internet............

..............well, not really but if I describe some symptoms can anyone advise me what to check myself before I visit the dealer? I've been seeing too much of the dealer recently so would want to avoid a trip if I can.

My bike is an 18-month-old 12GS with 16k on the clock, all done by me. It's had all sorts of niggly things from the "service campaigns" to corrosion to a clutch hydraulics failure - the only time I've suffered and actual breakdown. But nothing major apart from that and I love the thing to bits (OK, yes, I'm rather tolerant and easy going).

My typical journey on the bike is typically a 60 mile each-way commute to work: 2 miles at one end on urban roads, 50 miles on the motorway and then 8 miles on country/urban roads.

At the start of the journey, when the bike is cold, all is fine. However, as the journey progresses the following become apparent:

1. The biting action of the clutch itself becomes an on/off affair. Smooth downchanges are nigh-on impossible and at the end of the motorway stint after stopping at the roundabout, the pull-away in first either involves stalling or a whoaaaaa sh*t, I let the clutch out too quickly! Any town work is also difficult for the same reason. The clutch really is engaged or not - no progressiveness.

2. The lever goes all "soggy" and has lost its positivie "springiness" (technically minded, me). Even though the biting point is sudden, the lever itself develops additional slack not evident at the start of the journey. Also, when pulling it in for a downchange, I'm left with the feeling that one day it might not spring out again, although it alwasy has done so far.

3. In the slow bits, once warmed up, assuming that I don't stall it because of the on/off action, there is a noticeable judder (not too major but definitely there) when pulling away in first.

I've checked the lever sdjustment and also the fluid cylinder on the bars and both appear to be as they should be.

Has anyone else either experienced any of this or could anyone with more tech knowledge than me (not difficult) give me a clue here?

I think, given your symptoms and history, I'd be looking closely at the clutch hydraulics.
