I know they all do this, its not a problem and my bike is not going to self destruct but WTF actually causes that knocking noise at idle - you know, the one that disappears when you pull in the clutch lever. It really bugs the hell out of me and I'm almost as embarrased about it as my mate is with his Ducati's dry clutch rattle.

Anyone know what actually causes it and can it be fixed or adjusted out?

When you disengage the clutch the gearbox stops spinning. The noise is just from the play in the various gearbox components. Recalibrating idle steppers might stop it or at least reduce it. I think every bike (or car)I have ever had has done this to some extent, not a problem.

Thanks. I know its not a problem but just would like to understand why its not. I have recently calibrated the idle steppers and balanced the throttle bodies so I guess I just live with it. The engine sounds like a bag of nails at the best of times anyway, but nearly 30K and no engine/clutch/gearbox concerns as yet.
