clutch going?

Riding the 1100GS this weekend fully loaded with camping gear and wife. Quite regularily when accelerating around 4000rpm the revs would not rise for a few seconds then would seem to catch up. No noise or burning clutch smell and the bike pulls away ok from standstill. This has happened occassionally when solo.

The bike is a 1995 with just over 40,000miles on the clock. I'm assuming this is clutch slip and my clutch is on its way out and I'd better break open the piggy bank.

Any other possabilities?

I suppose it don't really matter what it is, as there is a problem and whatever it is will be beyond my limited mechanical abilities to either fix or diagnose so it's a trip down to Steptoe's anyway.

On an 1100 yes. Make sure the clutch play is adjusted from the back of the gearbox, not the handlebar lever

i.e. you must have free play at the clutch arm at the rear of the gearbox. If there isn't any it can lead to clutch slip.

Worn clutch would result in increased revs with no impact on speed - surely.

Like a torque convertor it catches up eventually

Worth noting that if you lack the special tools to adjust the clutch on the gearbox rear end then it only takes a few minutes to pull off the rear shock and wheel and it is possible to easily adjust the clutch without anything too specialised, plus you can see what you are doing if you have not done the job before.

You can adjust the clutch on the rear of the gearbox without special tools, just bend a key, like the kid in Matrix bent the spoon

Err, now you mention it I think your scenario is what is actually happening. I think I'll settle with clutch slip.
