my 2002 1150gs 43000 miles has a knocking noise coming from clutch or gearbox when clutch lever is pulled in, this only happens when the engine has warmed up.fitted new clutch but this did not cure the problem.the knocking only started after changing clutch fluid and std exhaust for remus y-piece and end can. anybody got any ideas what this could be.

Are you 100% it's coming from the clutch area? That's weird, noises from there should dissapear when the lever is pulled in.

Anyway, try to reproduce this but put some pressure on the throttle body pulley on the right side, then on the left side ;)

Why should the noise disappear with the clutch pulled in? the input shaft and layshaft still turn at engine speed, and if there's a tiny bit of play in the shafts it'll knock. :D

But i wouldn't worry about it until it knocks when in gear. :D

My RT has a knock when the clutch is pulled in too. I'm just living with it. All of my searching here seems to show that some knock and some don't. My GS doesn't.

I find it easier to live with if I select neutral when waiting at a red light.

It bothered me for a while because the bike was new to me and I thought I might be in for a hefty repair bill. 6 months and 13,000 miles later and the knock has not got any worse.

Noise definitely comes from cluth/gearbox area only when warm, and only when cluth lever is pulled in. never did this before but will take what the general advice seems to be, and live with it. Thanks for the input everyone

I would drain gearbox oil and check for shrapnel. My '02 1150 was knocking, started to whine, and then started to have dirty gearbox oil. Arrrggghhh.

Clutch Noise

Hi Davemac

I also have a 2002 1150GS with 108K miles.

Over Christmas I had the rear end stripped to either clean, grease or replace paralever and swing arm bearings and also replace the large crown wheel bearing.

The clutch made the same noise you describe, it knocked when the the lever was pulled back. Since the rest of the rear end was out I had the clutch slave cylinder replaced. The cylinder was shot and it houses a bearing, which would be operating under load in the conditions you describe, so could easily have been this causing the noise.

I also had to have the clutch lines replaced as they had corroded...For the second time! (The are other posts on here, possibly by Monsieur Steptoe, regarding the removal of the plastic coating to help prevent this)

Anyway, this appears to have reduced the noise, bearing(:augie) in mind the agricultural nature of the engine.

hi bin ridin the knocking noise is there all the time as long as clutch lever is pulled in, in gear or not,and only when engin has got up to temprature, when it's cold no knocking at all

thought about changing slave and bearing when i changed clutch but they looked ok,should have changed them anyway(you live and learn)job for this saturday i think.thanks for the info dazlove

Noise

Mine has been doing this for the last 30,000 miles (now 48,000)only when hot and the hotter it gets the louder it gets . Not sure what it is but it still runs fine , and yes it is hard to ignore it especially at the lights .

sounds like we have the same problem slaphead.i will leave thread when i've changed slave and bearing if this solves the problem.
