when riding along i sometimes hear a noise similar to that of a slipping fan belt, i have noticed that if i put slight pressure on the clutch lever (to take up the free play) the noise disappears. clutch action seems normal i just wonder if something is on its way out...such as the release bearing.

hear a noise similar to that of a slipping fan belt,

If it sounds like a belt then may be it is a belt - check the condition of the alternater belt and it's tension. After all, your clutch does appear to be performing normally.

Don't know why pulling the clutch should effect the noise generated by a knackered belt. A belt check is quick, easy and sometimes strange shit happens.

Russ.

i thought it was the belt first time i heard it. belt tension and condition of belt is fine.

i haven´t gotta clue

What bike?
Hydraulic or cable operated?
Single plate or multi plate (650)?

If cable, then I'd start checking here. See if it's trapped/kinked or full of muck!

Could be signs of early clutch wear/slip. A quick dip of the lever might be allowing the plates to seat better. If so it'll get progressively worse.

Good luck.....................

sorry, forgot to say which bike it is....

1150GS adventure, 2003 model...hydraulic clutch, i had the starter motor out a month back and inspected the clutch plates, they look to have loads of meat on em.

still completely clueless...as always !!

Just an idea!!

Being that the BMW clutch is like a cars clutch, is there a release bearing? I know on cars if this is starting to go it will make a sound like the one you discribe, just an idea, probably compleatly off track.

Noise

I have the same model/year and get this noise too. It is the alternator drive belt. Checked mine out and it doesnt look at all worn - only done 8k. Wiped it round with dry cloth to get as much black dust stuff off as poss and noise went for a while but has now returned. Belt tension? Havent tried this yet (clueless too) but will soon as noise goes on for longer as time goes on. I only get this noise when engine has cooled and starts again. Lasts for about 100 - 200 metres.

essbee, does the noise disappear when you dip the clutch ever so slightly ?

it´s not the belt as i said, it must be in the clutch mechanism.

if it fails i´ll let you know what it was !!
