Just had a call from a m8 who is in scotland on a trip, and he says when he pulls his clutch in there a nasty grinding noise, any ideas what it could be?could it be the clutch itself.Andy

Possibly the clutch thrust bearing as it's under load when the clutch is pulled in.

Fix is, depending on model, usually not too onerous.

clutch

Model is an 1150 sorry,I don't recall seeing a thrust bearing on the last clutch I replaced nor can I find anything on the maintenance manual that mentions a thrust bearing:confused:If I remember rightly the push rod just locates in the centre of the spring plate.Possibly rivets broke on the clutch plate or one of the six arms that come from the centre of the plate broken!!I don't think this is spline failure on the clutch plate as he still has plenty of drive, just the rattle/grinding niose when the clutch is pulled in.It does it every time it's pulled in even when in neutral.Andy

Andy, where the hydraulic line ends it will push something that doesn't turn around, then there is a bearing and on the other side of the bearing it turns around when the clutch is turning.

When you squeeze the clutch this bearing comes under load and it's the one that could possibly be making the noise.

It's on the back of the G/box in the very centre on my 1100 and every flat twin that I've owned. I presume the major difference from yours is that instead of a cable it's hydraulic, other than that it's pretty normal for all clutches to have a clutch thrust bearing somewhere in the system.

........even if its as basic as a ball bearing stuck between two rods of the same diameter - see Triumph parallel twins.

Early Guzzi V-twins use a nice radial flat needle roller bearing - which would be easy to get to if the frame cross member wasn't in the way ! DOH !
