Hi all, I was aware when I bought the bike that there was a problem with the clutch slave. Over a year the fluid has dropped in the master by a half. The clutch is working fine and I’ve read a lot of useful info here but is it worth changing the friction plate plate with the new slave at the same time. No evidence of leakage around the slave. I haven’t been out for a long ride on the bike as bought on lockdown and want to repair this before I use it. Cheers all

you do know whats involved changing the friction plate ?? the bike has to be split in half.. you can remove the clutch slave easily,

Thanks mate yeah but my thinking is that clutch fluid has gone somewhere. Your right though I’ll risk go with the easy option first 👍

Check the hose on the slave cylinder, as the original ones are known to rust under the rubber boot, where the banjo fitting goes onto the slave cylinder.
On my old 1150 it was starting to leak there, so I fitted the hose from the GSA which is braided stainless. You cab get the hose from Earls Goodridge or Probrake

That’s great it’s a new bike for me so that’s brilliant 👍

If there’s no drips if clutch fluid under the bike it won’t be the clutch hose .. is the clutch fluid in the master reservoir a silvery grey or dark colour ? If so it’ll be the slave cylinder.

If you're new or old to the 1150, read every post in the 1150 section by Steptoe :)
Look at the logic of his above post compared to other well meant advice ;)

Thanks Steptoe, the fluid is low, and looked pretty clear few silvery lines when I disturbed the fluid so ill go with the slave. I’ve read through the advice by Steptoe and really excellent repository. Added a pic for interest. Thanks for your help.

A mate owns a bmw workshop and did a clutch on an1150 gsa this morning. First clutch in 330,000 km. Slave was perfect. He was halfway through the gearbox rebuild when I left . He did another clutch on an 1150rt with 38,000km on Monday. Slave was leaking badly. His opinion was that very infrequent use aids in the failure of the slave.
Makes me want to squeeze the clutch lever more often on a few of the oilheads I own but rarely ride.

My 1150 gsa needed a clutch due to slave failure at 55k. it had sat for 5 years before I got it.

That’s really interesting, he could be on to something as it has sat for long periods....
