The following occured on a 54 plate R1200GS.

I have just been relayed home after loosing the use of the clutch in Wales. On inspection at the road side, one M6x18 bolt was missing and the other had sheared off in the gearbox housing. The clutch slave cylinder was left dangling from the hose and banjo bolt.

The first point is a warning to other 1200 owners. A single bolt will eventually shear under load from the clutch cylinder's piston. Worth just having a look at the bolts occasionally. May seem to be stating the obvious but anyway...

The second point is a question. A short engine replacement took place at the end of May this year at a dealer. My question is would they have had to disconnect the Clutch Slave cylinder during that work?

I do not have any photos yet but will try and get a few sorted.:(:(:(

Just looked at your photos and to me it would seem that the bolt hole in the slave cylinder hasn't seen a bolt for a very long time.

Probably YES, as the slave normally stays attached to the rear frame\final drive when removed to gain access to the gear box etc. My guess is that some goon forgot to put a bolt in. I say this because both bolts are under spring tension when the clutch is not operating. I think they are unlikely to come lose also your photo shows that the threaded hole looks corroded from "not seeing a bolt for some time" also if they are likey to come lose they should have been locktited.;)
