Clutch slip during overtake

I had this problem two days ago (ie clutch slip in 5th / 6th). I drained my very full clutch reservoir and its indeed fixed it. I presume its a safety feature its been engineered that as the clutch wears it will default to a dis-engaged clutch - its better the engineer sits with the clutch off than the clutch on (er engaged).

The fluid rises as the clutch wears - so if your reservoir is overfilled, it causes hydraulic lock. The equivalent of riding with the clutch slightly pulled in .exactly the same as on the 1150

Not a safety feature, just badly maintained :D

I have been trawling through this forum today as I have experienced some interesting 'moments' coming through Chiswick back along the M4/A4 from Gloucester this morning.

Approaching the Chiswick Roundabout and the bike stalls in 3rd gear before I even begin to downchange and come to a halt. Then the bike won't downchange at all to select neutral. I have to start the bike in gear which seems to do the trick and then I find neutral. So, next set of lights and I pull up in first, clutch lever in. Then, the bike starts to creep and hit biting point and stall. All this with no throttle applied and the clutch lever still pulled in. Did this twice this morning and I don't reccommend it on the outside lane of the A4!! So I have had to roll up to a standstill, on my way to work, every time in neutral, to prevent further recurrences. Am thinking the clutch is letting me know something is awry, as I had just done 100 miles of motorway riding at 70mph. But I would have expected a problem with acceleration and 'slip' rather than any stationery 'creep'.

My '02 GS ADventure has just clocked its 50K, which isn't bad in 3 years, so I guess the clutch has had a good crack. Think I might get a ceramic one now. Just didn't want to spend £800 smackers at this time of year. I would fit it myself but lack the confidence to do it. Looks like the dealership beckons, with their greedy arms open. Feck!!!!

It's your clutch slave cylinder. Not the friction plate.

Much much cheaper, in parts and labour :thumb

Or the master cylinder, but definitely a seal gone somewhere, fluid leaking past the seal means the clutch loses pressure and engages. This happened to the master cylinder of my 1200 a few months ago, replaced under warranty but if it had not been in warranty I would have just stripped the thing down and replaced the broken bit.

Thanks guys,

Steptoe - what's the *likely* cost and is it anything you can do??

Yes can do - depends what end the trouble is, if master cylinder about £85 ish , you can get rebuild kits.

The slave cylinder is a replacement unit, about £130ish - Thats parts and labour on both those prices.

I love "ish" jobs . :D
