Is that 25k and a new clutch already fitted and it's slipping?

Did you replace the whole clutch or just the pressuure plate?

You've been unlucky or perhaps you bought the bike used and it was previously abused.

No way an 1150GS clutch should be done at 25K. Mine is still good at >63K and that's far from exceptional as there are plenty of stories of >100K clutches.

As for the servo/ABS, when mine quits it will simply be removed as the two occasions that it has cut in don't warrant the cost of replacing it even though the first time would have resulted in a low speed off without it.

There is a thread on this site for a zero cost mod to eliminate the system.

I guess Rocket Rob might just be a bit pissed at possibly a 1st go at Beemer ownership.

My 1st 11GS was bought of an independent "specialist" and was a piece o crap. It had a continual clutch disengagement prob that went back to the "specialist" for over 1/2 the time of ownership which was 3-4 months. The bike had previous "history" as I was to deduct and I demanded my cash back.

It nearly did me for BMW's until I had another go on a GS and this one was fine.

Just bad luck if you have these things happen early on and after a quick squint at the 12GS forum i guess that there may be more pissed off folk:augie

This is my 5th GS......

2 X 1100 GS's (the best)
1 X R80 G/S
1 X 1200GS

and this 1150 GSA.....

bypassed the servo when it failed.........now the clutch.....

won't buy another......

Have you checked the obvious, i.e. nothing fouling the lever and that there's not too much fluid in the master cylinder?

Looking at the list of bikes it may be the same Rob that let me have a go on his GS that re-lit my enthusiasm?!

Guy, ex instructor and then sat in Ocean all day talking shite about BM's:augie...?

Good to hear from you... bad to hear you are so pissed off with the ADV. Sad really as you loved your previous BM's!!

As for Shetland... had to get away after working with Pete for 18 months:D

No seriously, we fancied a change, had a great time up here but now fancying a change again after 6 years. Roads are too straight... missing trees, and I like my trips away too much to "The World"!

Have good memories from Ocean and finding all about the "other side":augie

Since then had 3 K's (cheap) and another 11GS. I've kept with the 11's as I can look after 'em and i am of the same opinion as you.

As for everyone else; Rocket Rob... top chap, experienced GSer, sad loss to BM's if you get something else. Thanks for the go on your 11GS!! Hope all is well except for the f'ing ADV.

PS Was it the 2nd clutch at 25k?

Cheers

Mate...thanks for the PM....

had a 1200 GS last year which was ok......but really still hankered after the 1150 ADV....found a cracking bike with no miles on it and proceeded to rag it through the winter....

just dissappointed really.....the 1100 GS is the better bike mate....really...

all is good here thanks....just done my Advanced bike instructors course and live on a farm near Modbury.....

come and see us if you are passing mate..!!:thumb

Sounds cracking!

We are off "Sooth" next week for a look at some Scottish houses. Need to fix a place in France as well:augie

Great roads on Scotland:D

Glad to hear your are doin' fine and shame about the ADV! I fancied an 1150 but thought I would stick with 11's. Got a rough and ready one for keeps which I have "built" around me...

12's have left me a bit disinterested. I don't like dealer umbilicals:augie

"Farm near Modbury" you lucky bxxxxx:thumb

Clutch

Still the question remains, did you change the friction plate only?.

I guess that if a 2nd clutch was fitted the @£500 bit might point towards a full kit and a dealer??

PS Rob, well done on your IAM instructor bit!

Dealer?

Possibly is, but lot of work to take it out in the first place if it was all changed or not especially at dealer prices possible a non specialist who thought the friction plate was the job, unless a seal has gone. Probably charged VAT as well quite a difference in that price.

Sorry - yes still waiting for the bike to be done......full clutch kit @£500.....

some clutch's have been known to go at 18000 miles..!!!!!:eek:

Clutch now done costing £600......

in 9 months of owning the bike it has cost in the region of £2100 in repairs...and at only 25,000 miles......

like I sais previously.....utter garbage....

maybe?

Assuming that the clutch failure was not caused by an oil leak onto the plate, one has to ask what causes it.

Not pointing the finger in this respect, but around 14 years ago my brother was coming to the end of his tenure as a linesman with British Telecon.

He had had a Ford Transit for years, and never had a clutch put in it.
A colleague had around 6 clutches in 18 months.

When tackled about it, he blamed the clutches.

He was given the choice of any van in the fleet, and told if his choice needed a clutch in less than 6 months, he would no longer be driving for them.

3 months later-------

I would also suggest either a DIY manual or a non BMW dealership mechanic be found. Dealerships tend to have big windows! (To see you coming)

er....okay...?

Clutch slave cylinder had gone...not the clutch itself but of course the whole thing had to be replaced.....

all work carried out by Independant dealers...NOT main dealer.....

and I guess the Brake Servo failing was down to the way I use the brakes ......?

my 5th GS over the years......out of 40 or so bikes.....

I'm an Advanced Rider........so go figure.....

and thanks for your comments........no really.....
