I took my 1100 gs in for its 24k service prior to the dealer warranty running out at the end of March, I have now found out (500 miles later) that the clutch needs replacing & of course its now out of warranty. 3 questions should this have been picked up on the service, the dealer says its nothing to do with them, is £285 plus vat reasonable to do the work inc parts and does it have to be done by a bmw tech or can someone cheaper do it?

Dan, the good news is the clutch is probably not covered under the warantee anyway, just like brake pads and tyres :)

If it is a fixed price it is quite reasonable as the parts cost at least £100. It is a fairly easy repair but you must remember all the cable routes and the sequence of removal as it is costly and frustrating if you have a cable the wrong side of the rear subframe you have just refitted and now need to take off again. Try a none specialist but get a fixed price because it will take longer than they will estimate. If you have the time do it yourself.
