I am one of those riders who have had no end of probs with my two year old GS1200, that said I love the bike and was relatively happy if the probs were fixed on warranty. The bike had a knackered clutch at 14000miles and this was done under warranty as it turned out the oil seal had gone.
I am 10 days away from the warranty expiring and the bloody clutch has gone again, what I want to know before I send a letter of complaint of to BMW is how long the average clutch should last, this one has done 22000miles (the bikes on 36000), I do mostly motorway riding which isn,t clutch heavy.
I have now spent nearly £4000 in two years on servicing and repairs not covered by the warranty (god knows how many rear brake pads) and I could do with some feedback on other riders experiences before I decide to either extend the warranty, get a different make bike or just keep mine and hope for the best. The way I feel at the moment a new GS is simply not an option.

Feedback would be a great help especially on the clutch mileage.

Check the level of fluid in the master cylinder it goes up with wear, & to much will cause it to slip
i am on 84000 on my 1100gs & expect the same on the 1200 gs :)

Sorry no ideas on clutch life, alot will depend on rider style and why the clutches are failing?

The rear brake pads can be changed for the sintered off road style these last 2-3 times longer than the standard issue 'paper' ones.

Keeping the holes in the rear disc clear of debris helps as well:thumb

My 05 13000mls clutch res is up to the top but no slip as yet. Warranty ends nexy month so was thinking if i should take it in. It states in the warranty handbook that the clutch is not covered, if it goes in and i get slapped with a big bill theres no funds to pay it, dont know what to do for best.

Drain half the fluid out to prevent slip and crack on:thumb
