CN 2008 NT/2720 unlock help required

Received the update disk for City Nav. Europe 2008 NT yesterday. Proceeded to update which seemed to go OK. Purchased unlock code from myGarmin account, ran disk and updated to 2008 on my PC. Was expecting this process to upgrade the USB attached SP2720 at the same time but it did nothing of the sort. Tried 3 times on that PC and once on another with no joy.

Either I'm doing something dumb (quite possible ) or the fact that the currently installed main mapping (City Nav. North America v7 NT) is throwing the whole process and upgrading the main mapping to Europe just isn't possible

Garmin did let me order the upgrade disk and charged me $82.12 for the privilege.

I did try checking that the unlock code was compatible with the unit by uploading a tile of 2008NT to the supplementary memory, checking for street level detail, plotting and simulating a route. This worked fine.

Has anyone successfully upgraded the main mapping on a US import?

Garmin tech support have suggested that the new mapping should be loaded onto the memory card or into the supplementary memory space but my dialogue is in the early stages with them. My confidence is not high with the rep. I'm dealing with as she's suggesting I use the memory card when the 2720 doesn't have one.

Do you still have that air filter in your garage? I dropped out of circulation on BO for a few months shortly after you offered. Resurrecting the Viffer this weekend and need to check if the mice have eaten mine

Bumpkin - loading wizard should first install the new mapping on to your PC and once this is complete the wizard then asks if you want to update your device. If the numbers entered are correct the wizard then loads the updated mapping to your 2720 and takes quite some time to load.

First of all it runs through checking if the unit has current firmware (it has), then gives the choice of adding voices (no thanks, only other option is to cancel though I have tried installing an extra voice to see if that gets me anywhere but no dice). This then drops me back into the install process where it goes on to install the mapping onto my PC asking for the unlock code via the unlock wizard. It then ends asking if I want to start Mapsource or not. There is no offer to add mapping to the 2720

Maybe the disk is a regular full retail disk with the wrong silk-screened label?

If I were to guess... they don't do an installer that puts Euro 'installed' (base?) mapping on over US.... Be a bummer if that is the case, as I intend to move a 2820 the opposite direction if I return home in the next couple years...

When looking into it a while ago, I encountered a thread that made it look like one could hack it... Back-up and delete the installed map to make room... Add the Euro map as if it were 'extra' maps.... Change the name of the resulting file.... Put a file on in a specific place with the unlock code in it.... (or maybe that goes when you put the new maps on...

Can't remember the details, don't have the post to hand... sorry... And it may be just for 2820 in any case...

I wonder if you did the first half of above... and installed the new maps as extra mapping... what do you loose if it's not 'exactly' base-map?

I'd guess another call to Garmin would be in order...

This sounds very much like the problem I have, but am not trying to convert a US into a EU GPS

Part of the Garmin help may be of use and I'll post it later as they were trying to dump the corrupt mapping off my Nav 3. May fcuk your machine etc etc in which case .............

One's got to ask the question why? Maybe trying to protect the European market? If that's the case then it looks like I'm screwed.

Yes, with the 2820 you have mass storage mode that should allow you to hack it in some way or the other.

If there was a way to delete the installed US mapping (there's no mass storage mode for the 2720) or overwrite it with a small primary map image then this would, theoretically, free up the secondary memory to allow the loading of full regional mapping using 'Send to Device' in Mapsource. Of course, in doing this, there is the risk of creating a nice Garmin paper weight/door stop.

I'm confused. You've uploaded a tile of 2008NT - what's preventing you from uploading the rest of the tiles?

The GPS has a certain amount of storage space. I'd guess on a Nav 3 it's about 2gb. A full EU load is about 1.5 gb leaving 0.5 gb free to do with as you wish. This could be USA Metroguide, World Map or anything else less than 0.5 gb. If he can't remove the 1.5 gb of CN USA, then all he can load is 0.5 gb. That help?

Please make sure the maps are unlocked with the code xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxx. When the maps have transfered please safely remove your unit and you should have the latest maps loaded.

Guess you'll put your unlock code in where the xxxxx is and all will be well. YMMV

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately that requires the capability of mass storage mode which the 2720 doesn't have. The US mapping is locked away and only accessible with some Garmin 'hocus pocus' that the update uses (when it works...)

This secondary mapping is overwritten each time you add something but the primary mapping can only be changed by the official upgrade. Quite a few units work the same way, 2820, Nuvis and the Zumo although all of these either have a storage mode that allows you to address the memory via USB or a card that you can whip out and stick in a card reader. The 2720 has no storage card, there's 2GB of internal memory. As John says the US mapping on my unit is taking up a little less than 1.5GB leaving only around 500MB to store extra (European) mapping, CN Europe 2008 NT is around 1.7GB.

When you install 2008NT correctly it overwrites the previous V9 completely. The transfer to a 2720 takes about 45 minutes to complete. This model seems to have two distinct storage areas - the main map is about 2gb and only accessible using the Garmin wizard the other area is accessible from mapsource and allows you load bits of maps (as you described above).

The second part of the wizard comes after the option for different languages. But the wizard will fail if an incorrect serial number is used.
