Coil - firing on single cylinder

Hi,

About two years ago I shipped my 1150gs from South Africa to Belgium. When it arrived in Belgium I started the bike, but it only fired on one of the cylinders. I had the bike serviced and BMW informed me that the coil got moisuture in it and it had to be replaced.

Now, after a few months of winter I seem to have the same problem again.

Could someone please tell me exactly wich coil this is and. I would like to buy the coil from BMW myself. I'm sure with some help from the Guru's on this site I'll be able to replace the coil myself. I'm sure its worth a try.

Thanks in advance guys.

Is it a twin-spark or a single-spark? If it's a single spark the (single) coil is under the front of the tank (follow the HT leads) but it doesn't fail often and would usually affect both cylinders.

If it's a twin-spark then it'll be the stick coils that fail (quite common - affects one side or the other unless both have failed) - they're under the black plastic covers on the valve covers, fitting directly onto the top of the main spark plugs. One per main plug, easy to replace.

Its a 1999 R1150GS. Could it be the Ignition coil. Is there any way I could test this at home without having to fork out the €€€ for BMW to tell me what the problem is.

The bike starts okay, but when i pull away its sluggish and will then all of a sudden accelerate.

I'm not so technical, so please be gentle

If it's a 1999 model then it's single spark. It seems unlikely that the coil would fail twice in such a short time so the problem could be elsewhere. But if you're not technical there's only so much you can do. Are you able to take the tank off, remove the coil and check its resistance? If not, take the bike to a dealer or specalist and get it checked.

As for what the problem could be the possibilities are many - has the bike been serviced and set up recently, anything changed, has it happened suddenly or over a period of time etc etc?
