So, got up at 8am this morning and headed off for an early start as it was a gorgeous day here.

Not much to report on the way up to Isola, as it's a road in a deep valley which I've done hundreds of times, so first photie of the day is where I stopped in Isola village for a cracking cafe creme with France's biggest croissant. Guy didn't mind me parking in amongst the tables either.

After leaving Isola, heading past Auron, this is looking down into St Etienne de Tinee

DSC0007-XL.jpg

Heading up to the Bonette, there's a lot of snow melting, so waterfalls a plenty.

DSC0010-XL.jpg

Very little traffic around apart from the early morning cyclists trying to beat the heat

DSC0013-XL.jpg

Couldn't have picked a better day for it, as there wasn't a cloud in the sky. It had been really windy overnight too, so visbility was spectacularly good.

DSC0016-XL.jpg

Still need to get the crap off my sensor though :-)

DSC0019-XL.jpg

Another biker coming down. You can see the old abandoned military houses near the top on the south side of the Col

DSC0020-XL.jpg

Same auld hooses looking from above...

DSC0022-XL.jpg

Hope you don't mind tons of photies, cos I've never seen it as clear as this, so went mental with the camera :D
Looking back down the Col southwards...

DSC0024-XL.jpg

Couple of hundred metres up so time for another photo.

DSC0025-XL.jpg

DSC0027-XL.jpg

Getting near the top now, so all the vegetation disappears, leaving an almost lunar landscape. Still plenty Marmottes around though.

DSC0029-XL.jpg

Couldn't get right to the top round the little loop, as they hadn't cleared the snow away.

DSC0032-XL.jpg

And that's despite having some SERIOUS snow clearing machinery

DSC0033-XL.jpg

Still an amazing amount of snow up there, but it is 2800m above sea level and this was on the north facing side.

DSC0036-XL.jpg

And yes, it was as cold as it looks...

DSC0037-XL.jpg

Considering it was 24C when I left, it was a fair drop when I got up there.

DSC0040-XL.jpg

Had me Alaskan buttpad (well, the pillion one from the 1150 set) to keep me warm.

DSC0042-XL.jpg

Just as spectacular on the descent to Jausiers. Crystal clear...

DSC0053-XL.jpg

An action shot with two other vehicules on the road :D

DSC0057-XL.jpg

An arty farty shot, stolen from someone else's idea on here.

DSC0062-XL.jpg

Still quiet though and it was getting on for 11am on the clearest day in years.

DSC0065-XL.jpg

No skateboarding, longboarding on roller-skating

DSC0071-XL.jpg

So, got down to Jausiers, headed into Barcelonette, but still nothing on the roads to speak of.

DSC0079-XL.jpg

So, turned off to the Col de Cayolle which is best ridden north to south

DSC0082-XL.jpg

Still surprisingly quiet, must have seen no more than 4 bikes and half a dozen cars on the 24km climb to the Col

DSC0087-XL.jpg

Love the Alps at this time of year with the wild flowers bloomin'

DSC0091-XL.jpg

This is the start of the big long haul to the top...lots of Marmottes around, but not many people.

DSC0093-XL.jpg

View south from the same spot...

DSC0095-XL.jpg

In case you're getting bored with bike pics, one without the bike :D

DSC0097-XL.jpg

The hills are alive...

DSC0100-XL.jpg

Getting near the top so the trees thin out..

DSC0105-XL.jpg

Another one bagged.

DSC0106-XL.jpg

View south still as clear as a bell. The photos don't do it justice.

DSC0107-XL.jpg

The hills in the far distance are a long, long way off...

DSC0109-XL.jpg

This little lake is the source of the Var river. Nice stop for another coffee to perk me up again.

DSC0115-XL.jpg

Further down the Col de la Cayolle where it starts to level out just before Entrauns

DSC0116-XL.jpg

Photos don't give any real idea of the sheer scale of the mountains here. This was stunning.

DSC0119-XL.jpg

The bridge in the Gorges du Daluis doesn't look too high either, but the river is a long, long way below. People bungee of this in the summer too...

DSC0124-XL.jpg

Further down the gorges looking back up to the bridge

DSC0130-XL.jpg

Cool old building on the D202 immediately after turning right

DSC0132-XL.jpg

The little train which runs from Nice to Dignes. Keep meaning to have a go on this as the scenery all the route is stunning.

DSC0134-XL.jpg

Another Col

DSC0137-XL.jpg

Water in Lac du Castillon is always this amazing colour

DSC0139-XL.jpg

Gotta get the bike in though :augie

DSC0141-XL.jpg

Castellane was minging with bikes as you would expect..

DSC0144-XL.jpg

Saw this lot going down the river. Must be great fun. This is the same river which winds through the Gorges du Verdon

DSC0147-XL.jpg

Unfortunately, someone's biking day didn't end so well. One of a group of bikes left the road and wrapped itself round a tree. Route Napoleon was closed for a while.

Still clear-ish, but haze forming down towards the coast. This is the view of Mons from above.

DSC0159-XL.jpg

This is around 10-15 minutes from the house. Good views to the coast.

DSC0162-XL.jpg

Pointing the road home, that's all folks :D

I think all I can say is WOW!

Brings back great memories of cycling those roads; I can still hear the delighted "Wunderbar!" uttered by the descending GS rider to his pillion as we passed in opposite directions below the deserted Napoleonic garrison and he spied the twisting tarmac below.

.

Cheers fellas. To be honest I thought "wow" meself. It really was a perfect day. Saw lots of bikes parked up in cafes etc, but not toooo many on the road. Did see a helluva a lot of GSs as usual.
It was a good 8 hours by the time I'd stopped every two minutes to take photos. You guys have just seen a small selection ha ha ha
Funny you mention cycling those roads. Something it's always on me list to do is get the bicycle over one of the big Cols. I saw loads more cyclists than motorbikes, I cheered a few on too, glad it's appreciated....:thumb2

Brilliant mate..........bloody astoundingly crisp, bright and sharp piccies :thumb. Hell but I want to be there..........:beerjug:.

Nice one mate:thumb2 You had better weather than we had last July when we did the Bonette:eek: we were there when you had the flooding, still the weather was nice when we got back to the UK:tears.

Will be down there again in July on our route from Austria and Switzerland:clap

Nice to see you getting out on that clean looking bike !!
Looks like we had the same idea just different mountains
My day was 13 hours

Nice one franco

Deja vu - same place in July 2007  Loved that pass, second only to the Grossglockner in my opinion :thumb2

Ha ha, a good eye for a photie then ;-) The Bonette is much better ridden South to North in my humble opinion as the descent ito Jausiers was resurfaced a couple of years back and is simply stunning. Good to catch it on a day like yesterday too.

Wow, that looks great. I'll have to get out in the Pyrenees with you one day. I'll help you pick your bike up :D
I was thinking of going to Mt Ventoux originally, but when I woke up and saw the weather it was too good not to head for the Alps..
Pyrenees are on the list :thumb
The bike definitely isn't as clean as when I got it...:augie

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...ausiers_Alpes_de_Haute_Provence_Provence.html

just outside Jausiers at the foot of Col De Cayolle a few times, one morning we woke to a sharp frost and everything was white, the col was was closed until lunchtime so we sat around the pool and watched the world warm up, stunning.:thumb2

I actually won NEC bike show tickets in a photo competition with that one, but my little G7 can't match yours - lovely photo, what camera do you use?

It's a Nikon D100. Pretty old now, but gets good results. Mind you, given the light yesterday, any camera would have taken great pics :D Was thinking of getting a Canon EOS550D, as it would be easier for the wife to use. Might get the sensor cleaned on mine though as it's never been done, and I spent quite a while in Picasa touching up the dust spots :D
