For those of you planning a crossing via Pyrenees this will be of interest:

I had this very road plotted for April. If they’re anything like UK Highways dept. it will still be shut then - probably even bigger.
Good call.

I was planning on riding that route in February on the way down to Almeria. Looks like I need a Plan B!

I posted this when it happened as it was still the riding season in that region, and it is a very popular choice to cross into Spain.

Might be worth setting a calendar reminder to check progress each month and post an update here. Save people quite a detour if they don't check Google Maps themselves for closures. PITA for anyone wanting to stay in the new hotel at Canfranc Station.

The obvious alternative is to go to St Jean Pied de Port and take the D933 which I think is kept open most of the year.

I have merged the two separate threads together.

Thanks Wessie. I was wondering what alternative to take as well. I’ve got the 933 plotted on the way down. Was going to return further east.

I can recommend the D933 & N135 from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port up to Roncesvalles & Pamplona, excellent route with fantastic views, I'll be using it in June heading from Pamplona into France and across the Pyrenees.

the Col de Larrau D26 is good, a few miles east of St Jean but it is a minor route so not always open in April. Also D132 Puerto Pierre St Martin, but not done this one myself.

East of Canfranc you have the Col du Portalet D934, which should be open as they have a tunnel on the Spanish side. Takes you to the N260 at Biescas. There's a longer tunnel further east if the weather is poor, from Bielsa.

My most popular crossing route is A20 A64 then N125 which becomes the N230 in Spain.

Vielha near the border is a nice spot for an overnight, then go east on the C28. Hotel Eth Pomer has a garage and decent rates

Is not the Col de Larrau blocked these days? Certainly was last time I tried to use it.

I approached from the Spanish side in Sept 2022. There was a half barrier but I rode around it to the village of Larrau and on to Oloron

I will give it another try then; last time was May 2023 and on leaving Larrau it was blocked then on the French side with concrete barriers...

currently marked as closed on Google maps but it is winter!

That assumes they’ll check UKGSer.

The most likely outcome will be posts along the lines of: “Me and five mate’s are wanting to do Colin samsport but google wont do it no eyedear why its shite need help leeving tomorrows”
