Hey folks. Sadly discovered yesterday quite a deep and long stone chip (more a scratch, whatever caused it) on the upper part of one of the fork stems of my 2020 1250GS Rallye colours. Very annoying, will try to retouch it (even though I’m not very good at that sort of thing). I need to source some suitable kit. Anybody knows (how to find out) the bmw colour code/spec for the (black) forks? Thanks.

PS. To avoid future repeats, I’m thinking of wrapping the forks in neoprene or similar.

Can't help on the colour code unfortunately, but can recommend helicopter tape to prevent chipping - this is the stuff they fit to the leading edges of helicopter rotor blades (also to the sills of some cars) to prevent scratches and damage. Look up "Helicopter Tape" on eBay, I'd suggest the clear 50mm wide (as you only need it on the front of the legs

MikeP(RIP) was the master of helicopter tape...

Lots of previous threads about it over the years, the pro's and con's, try a search.

Thank you. Have you used it? Does it leave a mess behind when removed?

I have the 3m kit fitted to my bike an bought extra (clear mind) to do areas that were not in the kit , like the fork tops . It comes off fine and leaves no marks , but I normally change my bike every 2 to 3 years and remove it and the bike is mint. Bear in mind tho that if an area does get worn once the film is off it will show the unprotected bit so make sure you cover as much as you can , ie wrap all round the diameter of the legs not just the front .

Will try the tape, just ordered some as well as neoprene for back up. I called the dealer and apparently they don’t have a colour code for the forks, because they said it’s power coated, not painted. I think I’ll try bmw jet black from Halfords or anywhere, see where that gets me.

Pretty sure the fork tops are annodised.

Look annodised to me, but then I'm not expert.

Just to add, if the Touratech decals are anything like the Wunderlichs then these decals are thicker and much stickier than most helicopter tape or, in particular, ppf. Took me a couple of hours to remove the residue from mine, and only with the (judicious) use of 99% alochol. Personally, I wouldn't go down that route again, and instead will be using ppf.
