Is there such a thing??

If not, why not???

I've got a Vango sleeping bag, x-long with a square bottom so I can have my feet a bit free inside, and I've been putting my Thermarest inside it and it works well.....apart from obviously the sleeping bag gets worn on the ground and is getting frayed.

What would be really great would be a cobined sleeping bag/thermarest type thing, witha reinforced/abrasion resistant base and a decent sleeping bag combined....but I haven't been able to find one.

IS there such a thing???

Needs to roll down small but work well......

PS If there's not, this is hereby my copyright on the idea and whoever takes it up owes me big time :D

I think the Royal marines once used something along those lines - it's green, waterproof/tear resistance padded base, down filled .

( Used to cost £5 for a new one from the Q/M stores ;) )

I really can't see why it hasn't caught on....surely it's just the sort of thing that any camper would buy??

You could have different TOG ratings of bags and different levels of mat density etc......but I reckon it's a winner.....simple, easy to use, the whole lot!!

PS it's still copyright :)

Best option is the Ray Mears method.

Use a goretex bivvy bag and put both mat and s.bag inside.

Ex military bivvy bags are about £50 from army surplus stores.

All rolls up together and is nice and waterproof

Coming from a mountaineering background, I would say usually you have bivi bag, then thermarest, then sleeping bag. However, depending on the season you might have 3 different sleeping bags - it wouldn't make sense to have the thermarest sown in to each of them.

its called a 'swag' over here.

If its an outdoors thing - the aussies usually have it sorted.

Yes, I bought two bags this year with self inflating Thermarest type mats built in. They were down filled bags made by Mountain Equipment and they fold down quite small. They do have certain drawbacks though, mainly that sitting up in them is just about impossible and that when you turn in your sleep the mat slides about and can end up side on. Apart from that they did the business.
