Comparison between R1200GS 2012 Factory Low / Standard?

Hi Comberjohn,
Thanks very much for your reply.
However, I'm looking to compare the actual used bike sale values between a factory low & standard.

When I was thinking about a GS800 there were very few lowered versions around in BMW dealers and with the 800 being taller than the 1200 this was a bit of a surprise to me. So they are not very popular therefore no more expensive that an ordinary version. An alternative view is that they are scarce therefore more expensive. I appreciate this isn't very helpful but it does suggest you need to talk to a BMW dealer. My guess is that if you want a lowered bike you won't have much choice on spec or colour or anything else.

Sorry oddjob. Misunderstood your question.
Being short in the leg, 29", I did consider looking for a low version but I think that they look odd. But, if that's what it'll take...
Currently using a low standard seat with a gel insert and it makes such a difference, particularly around town. Had a standard Sargent seat before and while it was comfortable, it could be touch and go when stopping. It did actually 'go' on me last year at a junction. Very embarrassing.
In terms of values I think the best advice I could comment would be when I was buying the wife an automatic. The salesman said that it will either fly out the door or sit for months. It's a bit of a market niche and it's going to depend if anyone is looking for one at the time.
If you can get away with a low seat on a standard GS, that's what I would go for.

Or buy a standard bike (loads more choice), fit shorter shocks/springs to suit your height and then put it back to standard when you sell it rather than trying to sell into that niche. There'll be more of a market IMO for your shorter shocks that people can fit to their own bike than there will be for a shorter bike. That's what I did - bought a standard bike and lowered it by 30mm. It wasn't that I absolutely needed to, just that.....well, it made me more comfortable (30" inside leg). I use the standard seat in the low position - couldn't get on with the shape of the lowered seat. Both stands work fine. And I don't think it looks particularly odd :rob

Agree

Differences between a R1200GS Factory Low & Standard

The R1200GS Factory built Low is fitted with three different components in order to achieve the lower seat height @ 790mm:

a) Shorter Shocks front & rear
b) Shorter main & side stand
c) Low Seat

For approximately £300 it would be possible to convert to a standard GS by the simple retro fitment of used standard components:

a) Standard Shocks front & rear @ £150
b) Standard main & side stand @ £100
c) Standard Seat @ £50

However, I'd anticipate that most would choose to take the opportunity to fit new upgrades such as Wilbur Shocks @ £1,400 & a Sargent Seat @ £400

I have just had my shocks serviced and lowered by Denz0 to the factory lowered specs (approx same cost as parts mentioned)and have not needed to change sidestand or main stand, it does need a bit more effort for the main stand but it’s ok for me at the moment.
It has allowed me to put the std seat on the higher setting to to help with knee/footrest bend angle.

The bike will sit more vertical than before, so strong winds will affect it , and trust me you will notice trying to get it onto the centre stand if the road isnt flat.

With loaded panniers i'd run for the hills ;)

its 30mm if i recall out of the centre stand and 30mm out of the side stand

the centre stand is easy, straight cuts , the side stand is a bit more complex,

you need to cut it to keep that angle of the foot to floor relative ;)

Hi,
I've bought two low bikes, found the first on Ebay. Price didn't seem excessive.
Got knocked off it 6 months later and it was a write off.

Looked on here and the first bike listed for sale was a low frame.
The low BMW seat is painful - shuffling around after 10 miles!
I found a s/h low Sargent seat. I rode 560 miles to my mate in Germany, and could have kept going.

So no problem finding one in my experience. It does ground out more easily though, as ground clearence is less.

aye up kidda, any ideas or names or sizes of shorter shocks,as soon as i put the luggage on i can't get off mine a standard 2008 gs

You have to do the high leg on / off with luggage on the bike

There is no such thing as a low frame -

Its lowered shocks, side & centre stand
