Hello everyone. I have had previous threads on this subject recently and I thought I had it all squared away. But now I am really stuck.

I have purchased 2 "Used" driveshafts (upper part without the the final drive U-Joint spline) on Ebay after confirming both times with the sellers that they driveshafts I was purchasing were from a R1100GS. Neither of them fit my R100GS.

They do fit on the output shaft from the transmission but on my original shaft where there are 16 splines on the output shaft end, there are 20 splines on the other end that the final drive U-Joint that the stub plugs into. On the driveshafts I have purchased there are 16 splines at both ends.

The best I can figure I am either getting the wrongs driveshafts on eBay or possibly I had the wrong driveshaft on my motorcycle to start with. The reason I say that is because I just purchased the motorcycle back in April. I took it on a long 4500 mile ride in September and something never felt right with the driveline. It always felt like it was working too hard. Could also have been my imagination....

I am not sure what to do from here. I can't keep buying driveshafts on ebay hoping I might get the correct one some time.

I have attach pictures

Woahhhhhhh! Back up there! Is that a typo or are you really trying to fit an 1100GS shaft to an R100GS? :nenau:

Looks to me like your original shaft is not correct.

It has the final drive universal joint from the early version of the R1100 but looking at the destroyed transmission shaft part of the drive shaft, it does not appear to be long enough, but that maybe the photograph angle.

My guess is that you are being sent drive shafts from the later production run. Probably what you need is a complete drive shaft which includes both universal joints.

This might help, which is an extract from information I have already sent you in a previous thread.

I think you have been sent 2 drive shafts which are item C. Which are from the later production run. Which are not designed to fit with item B which is your original stub shaft from the earlier production run.

What you need to do is purchase item D which will fit with either of your item C. Then you will have a complete drive shaft and all should fit.

it was a typo, it's a R1100GS.

Couple of questions. If I purchase "item D" to fit the new driveshafts I got, will it fit on my 95 R1100GS? and if it does will I have to replace the final drive unit too?

I have included what is hopefully a better picture

Just buy a complete used 1100 GS (NOT S) driveshaft from a trusted vendor like Motorworks or James Sherlocks etc ect

Offer them your parts in the deal if you want to

You are wasting time chasing your tail

Honestly Bite the bullet and ring them and by Wednesday or Thursday you will have what you need

Can you not get someone capable to remove the upper UJ form one of the other two units and transplant it onto the failed unit ?

Failing that i have to ask, how did you manage to buy the wrong part twice off the bay?

Surely you asked how many splines were on the end of the shaft?

It’s clear from your picture, that something is not right with your original drive shaft. The gearbox part does not look long enough, which leads me to think that the rubber bonded joint has failed and the shaft has partly compressed in on its self. Which might explain why you felt things did not feel correct when you rode the bike last.

But in answer to your question. Yes. Just buying item D, it will fit into the drive shaft portions (C) which you already have, and will also fit the final drive input splined shaft. You already know that the two shaft (C) fit the gearbox output spline.

Make sure the part you buy is for either R1100GS or R1150GS. The R1150GS adventure has a keyed sliding spline.

It’s unfortunate that the OP has an early version of the drive shaft. So as there were two types of drive shaft fitted during the R1100GS production run, it’s probably an easy mistake to make. Many breakers are probably not aware of the differences. So the breakers supplied the correct item. Clearly had the OP purchased a complete drive shaft then he would not be where he is now.

Hi all,
Please remember that the OP is in the USA, Washington State.
So phoning MW etc will be difficult for him

Good Call on Location reminder I thought he was over here on assignment

If you are in US check out https://www.beemerboneyard.com

Put the last 7 digits of your frame number into https://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?kind=M&arch=0 where it says serial Number
Then "Browse parts" once your model and month / year of manufacture is displayed

Then Group 33 Rear Axle Rear Wheel drive suspension

Then Driveshaft

when you click on the part number this will show the last part number supercession that is for your bike

all of that added together looks like it tells me exactly what I am looking for. Thank you. As far as I can tell the 2nd version of the driveshaft for R1100GS's will fit where my 1st version was as long as I have the correct pieces with the correct spline count all the way through.
