I'm a little confused (not that it takes a lot!).

When I had our UK 1200GS serviced in Bucharest a couple of years ago I was very impressed that the dealer was able to access the bike's service history on his computer.

I've booked our current GSA into Vines at Redhill for a service and they have just called me back to check what was done in previous services as they didn't do them. They tell me the ability to access the bike's service history isn't available in this country.

The service for our previous GS was done in this country which seems to imply UK dealers can put the information on the system but not access it. That doesn't make any sense to me at all. Is it correct?

Thanks.

Kevin

Bahnstormer were able to read mine a year or two ago whilst SLM were the sellers/normal servicers.

It probably costs them money to kit themselves out so they can access the service database, or maybe it's easier to bullshit a customer than it is to make an effort to learn how to get at the data.

I had brake failure on an RT whilst in Spain a few years back. It was sorted by the local dealer in San Juan, Alicante.
When I returned home I got Astles to see what they had put on the system as the cause of the failure and it was all documented.
AFAIK all dealers are linked to a central database otherwise how can you prove service history for a warranty claim?

BMW Park Lane could not tell what needed to be done to my GSA (previously Wappings) as the last service had been at Vines.

Madness when there are two different levels of service dependent on age and mileage.

The common denominator in this tale seems to be "Vines".

Same here. Southport Superbikes couldn't tell me what had/had not previously been done as bike was supplied and serviced by Alan Jeffries.
BMW car dealers can! :rob

Thanks all. It doesn't seem to be an issue relating solely to Vines then (I was pleased with the service they did and liked the customer service including the offer of coffee as soon as I arrived).

The reports here that some dealers seem able to see the service history doesn't gel with them telling it's not a service offered in the UK.

I'll contact Motorrad UK and ask them.

Just realised I didn't post what Motorrad said.

They apparently have a worldwide system which shows the warranty work that has been done on each bike but not servicing. Apparently BMW Germany are thinking of trying such a system but in the meantime all dealers rely on the service book (the service book didn't seem to be much help to Vines).

That being the case I think I must have misunderstood what the guy in Bucharest was saying.

Are you from Bucharest ?!

They have had a national service history capability on their cars for years.... I had my first BMW in '97 and it was live then. I just don't understand why it isn't available for bikes. Madness.

:blast

Bikes are always behind cars when it comes to engineering innovation so why should the computers be any different. :(
