Computor has started to shut down!!!! switch on and all is fine surfing e-mailing photo downloading etc all ok , then just out of the blue computor makes a "click" from the tower screen goes blank, " No Signal " appears on screen, the main power light is still on the tower but a very small flashing light that normally runs has stopped flashing.
Only way to restart is switch off and restart, and restore previous session.
Whats happening any ideas. :nenau

I think the 1st thing i'd suspect is the PSU in the tower. Have you got a spare one you can swap it for to eliminate it?

The first thing is to check mechanical stuff: are the fans clogged with dust. This can lead to over-heating. A common cause of PCs shutting down.

Next, check mechanical connection. A common cause of intermittent crashes is a poorly seated memory module. I would remove each memory module and reseat it in its slot, checking for dust/fluff. Take anti-static precautions: roll your sleeves up and ensure a part of your hand/arm is touching the bare matel frame is the easisest method.

Same with any other plug in modules such as a graphics card.

Is the processor fan turning? The bearings in these pack up after a while.

After that, it's pot luck what is causing the problem. I'd be backing up the hard drive ASAP and then running some tests on it. Google memtest and run that to check the memory modules.

Wessie has pretty much covered everything. Use a hoover if its all a bit dirty and push/reseat everything that plugs in. Failing that then first thing to try is the power supply.

pc shutdown

In the case of a similar problem with my desktop PC I tried the cleaning and re-seating and different PSU. In the end I had to replace the motherboard.

You might take a look in the event manager to see if there are any clues with event logged prior to shutdown. Also if you do get a new motherboard check if it will accept your existing CPU - unless you decide to take the opportunity to upgrade it
