hoping you'll all be gentle .....

I'm moving from my 1st bike a Triumph Street Triple R that I've owned from new for 12 years to what I've decided to be my 2nd bike an R 1300 GS TE.

I am no GS expert so looking for advice on what to spec and not spec.
I will be keeping this bike for a long time.
I don't mind the price tag but don't like wasting money so want what I need but not what I don't.
It's unlikely to do much off-road. Probably be used for just a few trips per year with the lads and maybe 1 or 2 trips to work per month on sunny days only.

Similar thread running here with a few ideas and opinions……

Hi - lots of info to be found on other threads but seeing as you asked here is my take, if you can stretch to a TE and other than the top box plate @£235/Seat Heating £155) , and comfort pack (only if you have gone for the Trophy/White TE as standard on the Triple Black), I believe most folk are well sorted. TE seems to be the popular spec when spending this sort of money. Adaptive ride height at £515 seems to be proving popular.

Longer version :D .....

My bike is a triple black TE, the spec was picked for me as it is an ex demo.

It has :
  • Standard on Triple Black TE Comfort Package as standard on TE triple black (I think the blue trophy TE bike has to have this pack added for the different imo better screen etc as comes with spoked wheels instead ) . Adds the brilliant electric windscreen , and a centre stand, and diff pillion seat.
  • Standard on any TE Dynamic Package. You definitely want that. Standard on TE
  • Standard on any TE Touring package - Standard on TE and advisable if plan to add bmw side luggage later
  • Optional Riding Assistant. Solid but not amazing £795 option imho, jury is out. Possibly beneficial to resale. It has the radar sensors/blind spot monitoring/radar cruise control.
  • Optional Seat Heating. At the price it costs around £150 you'd be mad not to. A bit more fiddly to remove seats as a wire connector to each.
For the perfect spec for me, I wouldn't have minded
  • top case carrier (linked to central locking) which is a £235 option , to add the parts required later is about £500. My option now is to buy a Givi plate or just use a soft luggage option which to be fair are excellent from bmw.
  • LED Additional Foglight. £400. Side spots.
Quite a lot of folk are going for
  • adaptive vehicle height control which is £515. I do not have that, I can flat foot the bike and at 6'1 it isn't of interest to me personally but those who have, seem to love it as will drop the ride height down at very low speed.
  • I have the standard wheels, easy to clean. Spokes are a nightmare to keep really clean in my experience , the forged wheels look nice but perhaps a vanity thing both forged/spoked options look better.
Some other headline packages

Enduro Package Pro
  • Works out a good deal if you are going off-road or plan to add engine protection bars later, includes bar risers, adjustable levers, moves the indicators off the hand guards.

All very subjective of course!
