Started this evening with a cold chisel and drill to break up and remove the cat on a 2010 GSA

Long slow process but making headway but now need a longer drill

can anyone confirm whether there is a back plate before the cat in the headers or will I eventually breakthrough

dont ask why i am doing this,

I hope your going to fit a PCV or are you just going to wait to drop a valve, and your warranty is f##ked now too, nice, making your bike run lean will force the knock sensor to retard your ignition timing and loose what you gain and more:augie
I would have just fitted a remus header, but i've seen no evidence that removing the cat or any other mods work at all,if you want your bike to work better fit a PCV with autotune and run vpower fuel, anything else will just f##k you engine and make noise

What sort of evidence do you want to see? In practice, fitting a set of headers without a cat' makes a significant difference to the way that the engine picks up and revs. You are, however, quite correct about the need to revise the fuel map to accommodate the engine's need for a mixture that isn't too lean.

Just back from the Alps and felt that the bike (1200GS) was struggling at times at low revs at altitude i.e. there seemed to be flatspot around 2k which caught me out a couple of time when pulling through tight hairpins. Exhaust popping so bad at times on a part closed throttle on the big alpine descents that it sounded a like string of fire-crackers. Locals were

Bike had been de-catted by the previous owner and also a BOS end can fitted (no baffle). Bike runs well at A-road & motorway speeds where throttle openings are more constant; its just a noisy :censor: when you use the throttle in the mountains.

Is the above indicative of poor fuelling, and if so, what can I do in terms of a getting a better set-up? Intend to keep the bike a while and do not want to lunch the engine for the sake of a bit of TLC

Anyone in central Scotland who is recommended for set-up?

If you want to have a custom fuel map made on the dyno then YPE at Bonnyrigg are well respected. There used to be a Dynojet guy just outside Linlithgow but he seems to be concentrating on cars these days. There's also Wee Bob (Grant Racing) at Knockhill. They'll both map a Power Commander for you for about £200.

There's also the Dimsport Rapid Bike device but I can't help with a supplier of those, other than there used to be a guy in Kirkcaldy who posted on the Fife Bikers Forum.

HTH.
