Confused over map versions

Some weeks back, when I was having problems downloading map updates (well, that's a surprise, isn't it!!!) I was trying (and failing) to download the updates with both Garmin Express and MapUpdater. I seem to remember that the size of the download that Garmin Express was saying needed downloading was smaller than what MapUpdater flagged up. I cannot see any reason why, but that is what it was saying. So, just perhaps, maybe garmin Express is indeed better able to squeeze the update onto the device.

I was just eventually happy to get the downloads downloaded, so never got to the bottom of the discrepancy

So - a week later and phone calls to Garmin, they still can't get this mess sorted.
Garmin said to use map updater and... Yes, but on the Zumo 660, the map updater shows the tiles I've selected and then transfers them apparently to the unit. Later, Garmin Express will say all is good. My Garmin also says all is good, all agreeing that the 2014.10 maps are on and the unit is up to date. Try turning on the 660 away from the Mac and it says Maps cannot be unlocked. (You can see the Map behind it). Touch that and the map is revealed but Map Info shows that it is actually CN Europe NT 2011.30 - if it is unticked then the street mapping disappears and so on. Different attempts all say the the 2014.10 mapping is in place.
Try the Nuvi 765T from the car? Same thing. But it 'loads' the mapping everytime it's started for 5-6 seconds and also informs me that the map cannot be unlocked. Which map are we seeing then? Yes - 2011.

Remember Riktus said all of Western Europe fitted on his unit without an SD card in the 660?
Well - how/why do I get these images?

You can tell Garmin are really Professional with these information tiles. Ah, yes. "Essential Files Will Be Saved on the" - why all the capitals? Where will it be saved? Needless to say it is hanging at this point. Checking SD card forever. Previously there was no choice to load to an SD card - only the possibility of buying from Garmin.
So crappy and inconsistent.
Anyone got a definitive work-around? Right now, if TomTom had anything ace looking this and a Touratech mount would be up for sale rapidly.
I wish it was a possibility to take the lot to Garmin and see if they can get it to work by any of their suggestions.
